TPMS Question

I bought a set of Toyota sport wheels off of my friend. They are off of a 2005 Tacoma, and I have a 2010 Tacoma with the steelies.

Does the 2005 wheels have the correct TPMS sensors, or am I going to have to take the ones off of the 2010 wheels?

 

The TPMS from the steel wheels will not fit on the alloy wheels. You would need to get your ECU re-programed for the new TPMS sensors or use something like wheel straps if you wanted to keep your old ones. I've heard a couple stories where a tire place was able to make a steel sensor fit an alloy wheel but they're few and far between.

 

IIRC 2005's didn't even come with TPMS sensors.

Yep, TPMS began with the '06 model year.

 

So, in a nutshell, I cannot use those wheels on my truck and have sensors? I bought them for nothing.

 

Take the sensors out of your 2010 wheels....put them in the 2005 wheels using TPMS straps....problem solved.

 

I have 2005 4Runner that has TPMS sensors. I would recommend using the 2010 version since they have batteries that will eventually die anyway.

I was planning on buying tires from my dealer, so I will see if they can do it. If not, I don't have very much wrapped up in the wheels, and they have some very new retread tires on them, so I have some options, I guess.

 

Dealer won't do TPMS straps. Take it discount tire. People have also had success flipping the steel sensors 180 degrees to fit into the alloys. I don't see why you are giving up so quickly.

 

Not giving up. I was joking about selling the wheels, but as cheaply as I bought them, I could make some coin on them.

 

I have 2010 steel wheel TPMS in FJ SE alloys, and no problems. Discount Tire rotated my sensors 180 degrees and they fit fine. Straps work too. They charge about $50.00 for the straps. I think the dealer will want to install the alloy TPMS which will cost $300 +. Hope this helps.

 

I thought the valve stem hole wasn't the same size for a vehicle with TPMS vs a standard valve stem? If that's the case, you're only option would be the wheel straps or drilling out the wheels to accept the sensors.

 

You may be right. The 2005 rims may not be TPMS compatable.

Funny thing, went to my dealer and explained to them my situation about 2005 alloys and my 2010 steelies. They looked at me as though I was from another planet.

Looks like my dealership won't be getting my business when it comes to buying tires from them. Even though I would have preferred to.

Now that my dealership is no longer an option, any recommendations for places that are trustworthy? I am located in Kansas City, and we have just about everything any other big city has.

 

Hmm I'm not sure on the hole size. When they used straps for my sensors, they just threw a standard valve stem on mine and it's fine...I have aftermarket wheels though so I'm not sure.

Discount Tire tried the flip thing for me and then went with the straps, so they know the what they are doing.

 

I don't know 100% either, just throwing it out there hoping someone could give a definitive answer. One of my friends got charged a bunch of money to do something to a set of aftermarket rims so he could keep his TPMS. I thought he said something about drilling them out but I could be wrong. I'm still running stockers and don't know if the valve stems are interchangable with standard stems.

I have purchased alot of tires/wheels over the years from them and they have always done a good job and treated me fair.
