Haven't been catching up much lately, totally missed this! YES I'm glad you finally decided to tackle this now. Raise that gas tank too :boink:

    Why raise the fuel tank?

I raised my stock tank above the frame rails so it can no longer get caved in or hung up on. My OEM skid got caved in so now it's above the rails with a low range skid on it. I figured since I was cutting that x-member off anyway when I boxed the front section, I might as well make it better.

Unless you are doing a fuel cell or some other tank, then this logic doesn't apply. :p

Been rock crawling for well over 15 years and never once hung my fuel tank. From my 83 to my 04 DC, playing in the granite of the Sierra Navada mountain. It comes down to picking your line and approach angle. And for the most part, majority of the folks that play with rock are running 37+" tires. So that defeat the purpose of raising the tank up. But that's just my theory.

Plus, OP is running a fuel cell.

Meh I would say your assumption of everyone who plays in rocks running 37+'s. Tons of people on here play in the rocks from 33's -35's, some of the guys I know that go the hardest are happy at 35's and there are tons on here who have dented gas tanks over the years from hanging on them so felt worth it to me. But agree if he's got a fuel cell none of it matters lol

You do realized those folks with 37+" tire are solid axle.

I get it, if your 33-35" with IFS, than it makes more sense.

I’ve hit my gas tank several times. Even with a 3/16 skid mines all caved in and only holds about 12 gallons and doesn’t read below 3/4 of a tank. Raising the fuel tank is a great idea especially if your welding the crossmember in when playing the inside of the frame.

Been rock crawling for 20 and destroyed mine to the point where it held around 10 gallons. I put a new skid on it and it has taken some huge hits as well. I'm raising mine above the frame rails as we speak. The issue is not everyone is rockcrawling boulders on the Rubicon with multiple line choices, the factory fuel tank sits right at the brake over angle of you are going up ledges. Additionally you can pick the greatest line in the world, but if you slide off it you can land right on the fuel tank and cave it. Regardless of tire size I don't see how raising shit dangling down above the frame rails could really be seen as a bad thing.

I'm blown away by posts like this, the knowledge and creativity is amazing! It reassures me that when my almost rust free 2006 needs a trans or engine or tc or whatever, it will be easy to keep it running forever!!!

I can agreed with you on this. Different location with multiples approach lines. I've destroyed more Dshaft vs mangling my tank. But I got more body panel damaged than destroyed Dshaft because these trail here are so narrow with pine trees or rock that barely cleared for the most part. At the same time, I'm more careful vs sending it like some of the guys I wheel with who don't give two face about anything.

Yea we got that tree issue out here as well. Around here you have to send it sometimes (see the most recent UA vids, those are the trails I wheel on) but it does suck. That's interesting that you have mangled more driveshafts than fuel tanks considering the tank sits lower than the driveshaft.

It will be interesting to see what OPs truck looks like after a year of wheeling on SE trails with an LS:D

The piece that welds to the slip yoke going down to the pinion flange is a lot lower than the tank itself. If wedge many times with the 2nd piece shaft on rock and smashed it good enough to be scared driving 70mph 2 hours back home once off the trail. I think that explains why I was carrying a trail spare 2nd piece shaft. But will now have to see how this new 1 piece do. I did have it built HD with 2.75 OD x 0.156 wall vs the standard .80 or .120 wall tho. Should be more sturdy but only time can tell.

Im gonna wheel it and see how it does with the whole turbo setup. This truck turned more into a weekend desert racer basically. If it is fast and handles well I will prob go easy on it and build a straight trail truck. Buuuuutttt, its not fucking done yet!!!! Went to shop to buckle down and on my 3rd weld, ran outta gas. On a damn friday. No gas within 30 miles on a sat.

At home practicing tig'n aluminum now so I can finish IC piping. Aluminum is kinda hard. So hot.

1 is better than none I guess. Was stressing welding mounts w out shocks but now I’m good. 14’s should give me a little more droop in rear. Fox has cool products.
