The V6 2GR-FKS -at least it's not a pig!

There's certainly a lot of bashing on the 2GR-FKS V6 motor in the 3rd Generation Taco Forum. We'd all like more torque at lower RPMs and more power across the board. But consider:

    1. This motor is not a "pig". The V6 in my old (2003?) Mazda tribute WAS a pig - giving it more throttle would make it whine and scream, burn more fuel but not go any faster. Total POS! I recently rented a Dodge Durango with the legendary "Hemi". It was just a bigger pig.

    2. Toyota engineers came up with a motor that strikes a good balance of fuel economy, power, durability, and the ability to run on 87 Octane.

    3. The motor runs flawlessly. It never misses, pings, stalls, wheezes, or acts up. I've got 26K miles and it runs so smoothly that it's hard to imagine the motor not going 260K miles.

    4. The other V6's out there aren't much better; even the turbos when you look at the big picture. It won't be long until new Tundra owners look to trade for Tacos IMHO.

I'm not a big fan of V6's, but this one has stood the test of time and is actually pretty good, all things considered.

Unfortunately all car companies are being forced to get better gas mileage every year. The emission crap. I'm sure Toyota would love to sell a Tacoma diesel here. They aren't allowed.

Stood the test of time? You have a 2021 truck with 26k miles lol.

I would never buy a dodge, but the durago with the hemi is a rocket ship with a smooth powerful engine.

I think you may be a bit confused here.

came up with? it was a recycled engine in their lineup that they plugged into a chassis. it was a lazy move based on nothing but cost savings

The one V6 I would put ahead of the 2GR-FKS is the Honda J35A8.

So far no complaints with my 3.5 v6. For the engine size, and being normally aspirated, it runs pretty darn good. I don't find much issues with not enough torque. It meets my towing needs.
As far as pigs my toyota 93 v6 3.0 was gutless...that would be one pig of a 4wd pickup.

360 horse, 395 torque and a 0-60 at 6.5 seconds. Thats pretty quick for a bigger SUV.

When compared to a Tacoma, yes. Especially if it’s the SRT that does 0-60 in half the time of a Tacoma.

i think he got a Durango with a pentastartv6 and not a hemi. i drove a 5.7l hemi ram 1500 and that one when you pressed the pedal the RPMS where going up as fast as the MPH

imagine having that D4s 4Cylinder diesel instead of the normal 4 cylinder. all the torque that the little 2.5 can put out.
i use to love driving my old boss's Hilux when i was in the DR.

The 2GR-FKS is a disappointment as a truck engine. In addition, Toyota did, to be nice, a poor job on working out the software bugs on the fuel mapping. Does it work, yes. But, I would rather have the 2GR-FE in my 11 Highlander. It is a better engine all around.

The engine is appropriate for what the truck is. The truck is a glorified suburban grocery getter with an extra-ventilated behind-seat storage. It wasnt meant to haul cattle over the rockies. It was meant to sit in rush hour five days a week, with the occasional once a month excursion to your favorite picnic site so that you can take your flannel clad selfie in front of a waterfall. <-- and it does that exceedingly well.

It is no secret that Toyota often produces parts bin vehicles. Keeps costs down and is often reliable, tried and true parts.
