I'm trying to figure out some outdoor activities for my boys in the winter months.

What would $500 budget(Amazon) for everything which will do well in the snow. Not looking for speed, more of something fun and reliable and durable.

$500 can buy a lot of truck.

I've long been a quadcopter guy, but lately I've really been eyeballing the Enduro Knightrunner. It gets mediocre reviews due to being too topheavy for the serious enthusiasts, but in my book it wins points for being the best looking RC car on the market. :D

    So $500 for 2 rcs?

Traxxas, Arrma, Axial, Tamiya, Losi all make very good RC trucks. You'll want a 4WD for snow bashing. I tend to avoid the off brand stuff on Amazon as they run fine but parts are hard to come by and they tend to be less fun (sloppy steering, poor build quality). If you can buy a kit so that they can build them 1st and then bash them.

https://traxxas.com/products/models/electric/summit-1-16 That's a smaller scale Traxxas Summit 1/16 will work in snow but small enough to almost play with at home.
This is a 1/10 scale 4x4 stampede kit which means they build it from parts.

Then you'll want a couple of batteries and charger.

Are you good at soldering if not you can just buy the traxxas stuff (it's a little more expensive as you're paying for the brand). LiPo for a little more oomph

I've been out of the RC game for a decade or so now so not the greatest help. But I still have an old Losi XXX-T that works awesome. This one isn't great in the snow as it's just rwd, but I'd say the Losi trucks are a great, reliable platform with lots of parts availability.

Sorry, $500 just for 1 set up.
    I'm good at soldering.

Also, I would like it to be serviceable. Boys will break anything.

Traxxas Slash 2wd RTR. Reasonable, durable, versatile, boat load of fun.
I'm considering getting back into RC after running a gold pan RC 10 on dirt oval many moons ago. I have several friends who got back into it recently, Slash being go-to for the reasons I stated above.

Cool $500 is plenty for almost anything. Just look through these sites for what type of big wheeled 4x4s or even 6x6 that you'd like.

https://www.horizonhobby.com/ (Tower and horizon are the same company but they tend to have coupons and sales)
    https://www.towerhobbies.com/
https://www.traxxas.com/ (can buy these on Amazon or other sites)

or better yet just visit a local hobby shop.

If you want just basic (slower speed) snow fun and bouncing around a Tamiya Clodbuster is silly fun but not fast. If you want fast then perhaps a Traxxas Maxx or Brushless Stampede 4x4 something like that.

For batteries zeee or hoovo are good generic lipos just buy the connectors you need to solder on depending on the brand of RC.

You'll need a nice charger which IMAX makes some great ones https://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Professional-Battery-Balance-Discharger/dp/B0722NGPBS?crid=1TD54WFE5819T&keywords=imax+battery+charger&qid=1671122458&sprefix=imax+battery+charger%2Caps%2C114&sr=8-5&ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.18ed3cb5-28d5-4975-8bc7-93deae8f9840

And you'll need a storage bag or a metal toolbox to store the lipos in...

BTW if you can't tell I'm a little addicted to RCs haha so feel free to ask questions or if you're in NJ just stop by and I can show you a few to play with.

    Charger has been ordered.

I'm taking my boys for a stroll after school, see what's out there locally.

The only place in town is Hobby Lobby, which sucks at carrying the good stuff.

BTW that charger (I have the older model) has literally charged everything in my house and brought stuff back to life like Roomba batteries and old random tiny lithium batteries to lead acid stuff. Just get some alligator clips on it and you can charge NiCd, NiMH, lead acid, lipo and the great feature is cycling. So if you have a old battery that doesn't take much charge, just put it on this thing and cycle it (charge/discharge) for x number of times and it can bring some old batteries back to life.

I used to get all of my batteries and chargers off of hobbyking. I still have my little 6S charger lying around somewhere.

Hobby Lobby is not the place to go for electric assisted fun. :cookiemonster:
