Rear shocks clunking again - something’s off

    Anyone got a direct link to this special press tool? Ive done this job a few times and didnt use a special tool?

    Ok, looked it up...the original tool in the listing is nla..however there seems to be plenty others available. Maybe im missing something but doing the bearings in my 85 was not an issue without the tool...nor was my 94. As i recall now, i mustered up my own "tool" out of junk in the shop and everything went off without a hitch...that said, im buying one of these anyway.
    If i can add...for those interested in doing ur own repairs and having the space...buy a press, the biggest one u can afford. Before moving, i had an old unit that was just too big to transport to AK...sadly i left it behind. It has been replaced with a 30ton chiner unit i got from aih(alaskas harbor freight)..this tool for me anyways, sees a lot of use and will likely be one of the best investments in ur shop.

    The blue one might have been from an older video. The "new ones" from the ebay store are black with red adaptor plates.

    Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
    To bad I am so far away with current Fuel prices .

    Having all the goodies do do the rear wheel bearings .

    The tricky part is the tool to press the axle off the bearing and reinstall .

    With having a press the interesting tools you build over the years.

    Yeah.
    IMHO, that doesn't look too bad. Just a lot of brake dust, which is normal. No obvious brake cylinder leaks, shoes look like they have plenty of life left. Just needs to be cleaned up!

    Ha-ha! I was with heavy heart just getting ready to fork out 200.00+ to toyota for backing plates & I saw this....
    So the shoes are definitely not evenly worn. The right shoe has more meat than the left. The left is more worn in the middle of the shoe. Is that ok?
    & I have not yet unearthed the passenger side. Just since the last time I had the wheels off (when we diagnosed the bearings), I actually had a little struggle getting the wheel off. Usually they wanna drop as that last lug nut gets loosened. Plus the drum has no budge to it whereas it did.

    Yeah.
    Shoes are cheap, so it wouldn't hurt to put new ones on while you are in there. But they don't take on a big load. My '92 still had life left on the original shoes at 130k miles, and I towed a boat with it. No need to replace stuff if it's working.

    Those don't look terrible.

    Not sure how much further you've gone since posting those photos. Unless you have the drum brake tools (all you REALLY need are the cup compressor and spring pliers, but you really need them to do the job) I wouldn't even pull the shoes off. While they certainly are a nice to-do while you're in there, they are also really easy to do later. Being that you'll be pulling the axle shaft and replacing the axle seals, you'll want to ensure that's done properly and not leaking oil onto your new shoes.

    I had a delay due to the press not being available til yesterday. I completed the presswork today. I was too cheap to buy the bearing/retainer ring press piece that one could get with "the tool", so it took me a minute to MacGyverette that step. Slept on it last night & had it all figured out this morning.

    One side is reinstalled. I'm also doing the rear brake lines. Hopefully we'll be put back together tomorrow....

    Oh, & while I will whine a little as my back is feeling the repeated raising & lowering of the press & lifting of the axles, a press is definitely going on my wish list... Although I do somewhat give myself kudos for figuring out how to do other jobs, like the front wheel bearings & the UBJ's without one...

    Had a bit of a delay yesterday -

    Getting back to it in a bit.
    Questions -
    1. With one parking brake cable hooked up, I can’t get the other to quite reach. I would think with the shoes being dialed in so as to get the drums on, the cable would be loose. Am I incorrect?

    2. I have watched Tim’s vids. I do not see any drum brake adjustment. Nor do the links provided in this thread for @turbodb or by @Area51Runner. Do I just bleed & go & see how it feels?

    Honestly, this is why I leave brake work to a shop. I can read this over a billion times and it always puzzles me. Bleeding the system is what really bugs me. I start to think about safety and say screw it, just pay someone. lol

    1. You may have to "fight" the bell cranks a little bit to hook up the parking brake. It shouldn't be a ton. If it's a ton then something might be adjusted incorrectly.

    2. Did you bake off the tensioner before you pulled the drums off, or were you able to get them off without changing anything. If you didn't change anything, then I highly suggest getting things back together without adjusting things.

    Adjusting the rear brakes is a little tricky. I usually end up adjusting by hand until the drum just slides over the shoes into place. Then the rest of the way with the parking brake once everything is back together. It can be easy to over tighten them, so I try not to go overboard with the number of clicks on the parking brake.

    I had to back them off. I’m learning all about the rear brakes here. One bell crank is too far from the backing plate. One seems ok. The screw for the one that’s too far is pretty much maxed out already. Why? I don’t know. There hasn’t been much activity back there since I’ve owned it. There is slack in the cable, so it’s not that it’s too tight.

    Now I’m finding that one of the brake line connections on the rear line splitter is compromised. I can’t get the line to seat with the fitting all tightened up….
    Me & my big ideas. “Oh, I know. I’ll change out these lines while I’m at it.”

    Not sure if I can try thread chasing it? Although most stores don’t stock m10-1.0 taps. Probably faster though than having to wait for a Toyota part….

    Alls I wanted to do is see if the axle seals leak.

    Finally got out for a drive today.
    But first, story time :)- Ordered a tap for the three way brake line splitter, which came in wed. It actually did the trick. Then came the exasperating task of getting the fittings to sit happy. I had broken off the bolt to the three way bracket a long time ago. It's been zippied ever since, however these new fittings weren't having any of that since it allows for a little movement. so I had to drill out the old bolt & put a new bolt & nut in. Long overdue anyway. Then the parking brake. Pulled the emergency brake a whole bunch of times before I figured something was off. Sure enough the right bell crank is frozen. I manually adjusted it best I could for now. There is definitely a little hang up at one spot while the wheel rotates. I took the drum back off & cleaned up around the inside edge with a diamond bit & wire brush. Seemed to help somewhat.
    Anyway, there's a definite improvement. No more clunk or rotational vibe. I'll check for leakage tomorrow, as when I returned today it was dark out. As long as all is good there, I'll tackle the brakes next....

    Update - Ran around doing errands. All was good. Then filled up the tank & 1st thing I heard when pulling out away from the pump, taking a left & over a slight bump was "clunk". This continued on my last errand & backing into the driveway.
