No, was working and caught it while watching the game. I had thought they’d replace the slab before another static fire but was wrong about that. So now B9 gets cryo tested?

It depends a lot on the chemistry and amount. Sometimes the resultant steam just adds to the pressure. Sometimes an innocent looking lake will become hot and caustic. How full is the magma chamber? Sometimes lowering the pressure can cause dissolved gases to boil out like a massive case of the earth getting the bends causing the magma to foam like a Mentos & Coke bottle. It’s a shit show waiting to happen. As of yet we’re barely to the stage of recognizing the imminent signs and no clue about how to defuse one if that’s even possible. Run and hide is about it.

I was waiting on some Electron tweets that never came- delayed due to high level winds…
And I figured everyone knows it’s the 50th anniversary of Apollo 17 by now :D

I know the Livermore fusion breakthrough has already been discussed on this forum, but I'm following up late with an article I like as an explainer for laymen as to why the breakthrough was so important.

tldr: People have been using nuclear fusion since the 1950s to create thermonuclear weapons (H-Bombs). Unfortunately, unlike nuclear fission, it has been much harder to build a process that could harness fusion in a way to generate power. The two big reasons are, first, nuclear fusion is so hot that no material can contain it. If you need a building to capture the heat from fusion to make electricity, that's a problem. Second, the ignition used in fusion weapons is actually a small fission bomb (A-Bomb). Again, that's a problem if you need a building or something to contain a fusion reaction. The Livermore team solved both problems by, first, containing the fusion reaction with magnetic fields and, second, using lasers to ignite the reaction. This is easily one of the most exciting developments of the last decade. Let's hope that it means nuclear fusion as a carbon-free, nuclear-waste-free energy source is much closer than "20 years away."

I just want to point out that the image you have of the toroidal station is magnificent, and I want to live there! Is it a Syd Mead?
