Defenders have adjusted to the rule by simply putting their arms down and catching themselves as they bring the QB to the ground.

Again, im almost categorically opposed to this roughing the passer rule but its a rule so you've got to adapt to it

 

Garropllo never got calls like this. He was injured when they didn’t blow the whistle for in the grasp when TWO players had him wrapped up and rode him all the way down. Protection is not randomly applied, it’s unevenly applied.

 

With all these rules to ‘protect’ the QB, they get injured just as much as they did prior

It would be very hard to sign JG again given how much cap space they could free up. All those cast members have a price. QB’s that play well on rookie contracts provide an expanded window of opportunity to sign those quality players. It closes quickly restricting that ability. Would Jimmy recognize SF as the best place to succeed and accept another pay cut and possible demotion? Do other GM’s feel the same and so are unwilling to offer him a contract? Those two are intertwined.

Exactly the point. However, Lance is still an unproven player and we all know how often prospects fail to meet expectations so they’d still be going into next season with only Purdy as a known quantity. A lot is riding on both the last games of the regular season and the post season for all 3 of them. Purdy’s poise is remarkable but he’s gotten away with dropped or overturned pics in all 3 games so far. That luck will surely run out. The pic he did throw in the first game wasn’t bad given the situation and so far he’s been making the most of things without being skittish or foolhardy. Another box he needs to check is playing from behind late in a game and can he throw a deep ball that isn’t a lollipop.

 

Very true. JG is that known quantity on the field, at least.

Could be part of it too there's no "book" on Purdy for the other defenses to gameplan for him.

Could also just be Kyle doing a great job attacking second tier teams at their weakest points. I’d heard that Seattle was vulnerable to TE’s after the previous week. Similar stat lines have also been used to “prove” that Kyle didn’t trust Jimmy. I don’t think that’s the case for either of them, Kyle runs the offense his way which is why they had little interest in Brady and what his contract would have meant to the cap.

 

Agreed, someone with a pass rush will end it for Cousins. He’s a poster child for offensive linemen.
