i just did exactly this. Bought a used TRD s/c and tripple checked I had all the parts, etc…
Mine spun free and smooth by hand, but I ended up having to send mine in and it needed the full rebuild.

I found walking step by step of the magnuson install manual and checking each part/ bolt was there, was super helpful. I bought all new plugs and soft seals

Buy once and cry once, @Dawglb44. You'll save yourself a LOT of posterior pain if you spring for the rebuild up-front, rather than finding out its needed when you've finished the install.

 

thanks for posting that video.. I've been wondering about mine for a bit as I've had some similar noises from the bearings/rotors. I picked mine up used as well almost 8 years ago.. I've done my maintenance on it, but it needs a rebuild for sure.

Someone NA will likely want to bling out their stock truck. Hopefully the maker gives a partial refund or even does a take back/swap for the updated one that works.

I have a apr t stat on my 4runner that I could swap over if I stay superchargered on the Tacoma. It has a notch for belt clearance and is cast aluminum

 

Anyone relocated their battery?

he's working on it. Give it some time. I'm hoping to try a revised part and give it a go again.

 

I’m having a hard time believing from that video those rotor packs and bearings were actually “trash.” That blower sounded perfectly normal especially if there was a solid coupler installed. There is no way you could turn that SC pulley by hand smoothly yet have bad rotor packs. Plus if those rotor packs were trash it would have destroyed the soft aluminum casing. Anybody that’s taken out the rotor packs know how stout and heavy they are.


I guess peace of mind for lack of knowledge is king. I’m guilty of it too on certain subjects but not this one.

So I really hope SC online is being honest about their assessment and I’m wrong. Otherwise they are just laughing it up on this thread.

When they sent it back, it was 90% quieter.

it still has a “growl” and idle, but I can’t hear it unless I’m in the engine bay.
Before, the growl could be heard while driving and on no throttle coasting. I expected some noise but that seemed too much.

Like you said, idk what I should have been hearing and a lack of knowledge on the specifics as well as any service history on my blower before I bought it, I’d rather have the peace of mind it won’t detonate and destroy the whole 1GR.

Normally I’m right there with you. But the cost of the rebuild is enough to give me pause on this one. The more I think about it, the more that what y’all sayin is resonating with me. Maybe at tax refund time lol.

i usually error on the side of piece of mind, especially when I don’t have the expertise to make a dead nuts accurate assessment. The cost is a big enough factor on this to give pause. It does spin freely by hand, don’t feel a ton of play in it, so I’m considering sending it lol.

Yes, I was able to grab the parts I was missing from SC Online by through email. I referenced part numbers when I could, but mostly just describing pieces that were “in bag #” that “look like this” in the install manual. They got everything easily and were willing to separate pieces in the groups of “bags” that new kits come with.

if you do decide to get it rebuilt, now or later, SC Online is the place to do it, unless you want to yourself.
They tear down and report back within 2 business days. However rebuilding and return can take close to a month if their busy.

 

But will it fit a Sequoia....

Thanks for the info. I’ll definitely renegade them when I have all that figured out. They were really responsive when I was inquiring about the rebuild cost. Preciate it!
