good morning all! is this a good thread to ask a technical question on, or should I keep it in the garage forum? I ask because there seems to be seriously knowledgeable people participating in this thread.

ok so I did my drum brake yesterday. that's not a typo I said drum, singular, and I think I have the passenger side done. I think I even adjusted it well. I also feel like I deserve a PHD for doing drum brakes for the first time. why do these still exist? anyway here is my issue. I think I might have tweeked the auto adjuster ratcheting thingy. I compared it to the stock one I took out, and it seemed fine. I just don't see how it could work. it just kinda lays on the adjuster wheel and doesn't seem to do much, not a real distinct rachtet action. thoughts?

    Good Morning all :hattip:

Snowmeggedon adding up to about 2-3 inches so far. It's supposed to keep snowing through to the afternoon so I'll prolly get it cleaned up around noon to get the dump run done. I hate driving on it = compaction then ice. Not good for a driveway with a slope...

Good luck with what you need to do. Be safe out there.

If you have the drum off and your trying to figure out what it does, does it look like it really can't do much of anything on our trucks? Am I worry about this to much if the brakes actually seem to work good?

In the gif I posted, do you see the arrow glide over the flatish L shaped piece? As long as that flatish L shaped piece remains in contact with the adjuster gear, you should be all set.

Thanks for help, I’m sure I’m worrying to much. I’ll be able to know better when I do my other side in a bit anyway. I’ll pay closer attention before I take it apart.

You're welcome. The first time for anything is always kinda nerve racking.

The best way to do it is to jack the rear and remove both drums then do each side ONE AT A TIME. That way you'll always have a reference to go back to.

Of course this is a pre-cell-phone-with-camera recommendation and you could just take a pic before you start tearing into the bits and pieces.

For those who don’t know how to adjust the adjusters post-install… you back up and hit the brakes hard. It will cause the ratcheting action. Do this several times and you should be good. Once it hits the last adjustment, it just won’t ratchet. You don’t need speed, it’s the sudden stop that does it.
Of course, all of that is unless there has been some modern change that works going forward…
