No, it was more elaborate lol.

sold it, leased an Ascent, great car, but wife also agreed selling the Tacoma was a mistake. The Subie was a lease so had to ride it out.
During that time i bought and flipped two Ford Rangers. A 2000 and 2004 in 2020 and 2021, this is where the used market helped out a lot.
Finally, sold the Ascent to Car max once my 22 Tacoma was in production. Car max gave me $9K more than I owed. That was wild! So I put 18 down all together.

Right now, this might actually be my last and keeping it “forever” because I doubt the 24’ model will come with MT

Look, let me get this out, the Frontier is/was a solid truck.

I know people who own the previous model, good truck. When I was shopping back in ’16 for my personal truck, I gave it look and tossed it over inside out. It just isn’t build as good as the Tacoma for what I was looking for. Normal everyday DD, I’d probably would have picked it, the price difference was enticing, just not for what I was looking for. A beast that takes a beating and keeps ticking. And tick it does lolo!

TOYOTA is the leader in automotive technology, almost everyone else is using some of their innovations.
Can they lose the edge? Sure, that's why I always keep my eyes wide open.

I’ll disagree with that. I feel Toyota is the last to innovate.

Ok I'll give you just a couple, Hybrid tech, and VVT, there's more much more but just those two are game changers. GM was the leader back before my time in the 50's. Did you know they developed fuel injection and licensed it to Bosch and adopted by MB to be used on their products while GM used carburetors for decades lol!

A lot can go wrong with TOYOTA to be sure. They can be "forced" by competitors to go the wrong path such as full EV. EV is not the answer, its only an alternative. And a good one for a lot of city dwellers for one. Just not the answer for the reasons being mandated by the policies.

Maybe, but most, or at least I don’t, make purchases based on “unlikely/low probability what if” situations.

The old frontier was extremely outdated interior and out and I would never have bought one over a Tacoma. The new truck is much different.

Agreed. Look at the ancient power train in the third gen Tacoma. Also Toyota is way behind other manufacturers on EVs. They change the body panels on their vehicles every 8-10 years and act like it’s a huge redesign. When’s the last time they even came out with a new model SUV or truck?

Turd speaks the truth. Imagine a 8 or 10 speed in a Tacoma and it might not be gear hunting and getting 16mpg in a truck that should get 21.

I'll give them that on the hybrid, but they just perfected it. Hybrid's were not brand new at the time. Toyota stays with whats been reliable for them. They usually wait to see what success other manufactures come up with on new products them improve on them.

    I'll agree to disagree lol!

Here's some innovations and patents held in last couple years alone

    "What are Toyota's patents?

According to the IPO, Toyota's engineers and scientists were granted a total of 2,753 patents by the United States Patent and Trademark Office in 2021. A majority of the patents were related to electric vehicles, battery technology, autonomous driving systems, software and AI.

Nissan back in 2018-19 had this presented to us (former) shareholders, but seemingly never produced it...

The Tacoma was all-new in October of 2004, as were the 4Runner and Land Cruiser Prado in late 2002? The Tundra was new from scratch in 2007 and last year in 2021. Then of course the Sequoia. Other than that, nothing else, until next MY. As you can see, the age of these all-new products...

Toyota has many innovations under their belt, even as someone who works for a competitor. They don't always just sit back and perfect what someone else did before. Often Mercedes-Benz is given credit as innovators, when they are just as culpable in the same practice. They didn't invent ABS and airbags, yet car guys are always so quick to give them credit for it. They perfected them though.

Anyone can get a patent by improving, or perfecting a component thats already out there. They just have show their component, or part is engineered different enough from another manufactures one that has a patent.

I'd take this over the equivalent Toyota 10 out of ten times. I don't care lol. I love these.

Note the complete lack of front suspension travel, historically always been a problem with Frontiers too:

I took a picture of the first 4x I saw... ( It may have been earlier in this thread, or a similar one...)

The Tacoma may be a little Odd looking with the airstip out on the front, but still manages to pull it off and still be called a 'good looking' truck.

The Nissan is just ugly, it looks cobbled together.

I been a Nissan PRO 4X driver for 4 years. Manual transmission, top trim level. Nissan X-Terra was discontinued in 2015.
Now driving 2019 Tacoma TRD OR 6MT AC LB for 3 years.
    My PERSONAL IMPRESSION AND EXPERIENCE:
X-Terra was a bit more capable off road (Checking on the same trails on same conditions) because of shorter wheelbase and 4.0 l engine
producing more torque (where x-terra was going unstoppable on 2 gear, in Taco I have to engage 1-st gear). Basically, that's it.
Quality of X-Terra was REALLY (believe me, REALLY) crappy, and these days by summary of overall qualities, longevity and resale value I will put Tacoma #1, no doubts.
P.S. Pro 4X ware never produced with LED lights out of factory, what you seen
    is aftermarket upgrade.

give the Tacoma a better powertrain and what I’m now discovering, better highway manners and I’ll be happy. Also why can’t I chose LED headlights as an option here in Canada? Also no rear park assist except for limited trim here. From a purely driving experience the new frontier pro 4x is ahead of the the Tacoma.
