Can you give an update? And please include your tire size.

His posts show 315/75R16 (35’s). Should drive a little bit better than stock on stock tires.

Your input is a guess at best. And probably best left for him to respond to.

If he is running a 34.6 inch tire on the stock 4.30 gear ratio then he would need a 4.88 gear ratio to maintain a similar ride to stock.
    34.6x4.30/30.6= 4.86

Since he upgraded to 5.29 The calculation changes.

5.29x30.6/4.30= 37.64 Meaning he could run a 37" tire and be similar to stock

The only unknown factor here is the increase in un-sprung weight.

Lol, this ain’t amateur hour. I’ve regeared every vehicle I’ve owned (except my Tacoma, waiting for my February time slot to arrive but parts are here). 35’s are much heavier than stock and higher rolling resistance. So no, 4.88 on that tire would not feel identical to stock although the rpm would be close enough to be considered the same.

5.29 is only an 8% difference beyond 4.88. It is not drastic. Therefore, why I said it would be “a little better than” stock. The little better than is that 8% making up for the heavier tire and providing a teensy bit extra oomph than stock had.

proportional math in gearing doesn’t do much besides get rpm numbers equal. It doesn’t create equivalent performance. I’m apt enough to do proportions but I don’t.

    But what do I know?

    Hello gents,

Was planning to report today. I am running 315 75 r16s as you have deduced based on prior posts. Nominal unspung weight versus a stock tacoma (well, other than the obviously big tires I suppose, lol. I have SCS F5's and MT02 Patagonias). It feels slightly taller than stock on the road. about 2500 RPMS at 65 mph, still have babied it until today. Crawling a bit tomorrow down in Corral Canyon.

My 0.02 is that anyone who goes with 4.88s in an MT (with 35s) would be disappointed. I am glad I went 5.29s. It is not over geared at all for road handling, an improvement over stock even. I cannot wait to try it off road tomorrow.

I’ve only really been posting in the manual transmission fan club thread, but I went to Revolution 5.29s last weekend. Installed by @Texoma. Running stock tires on the MT. Absolutely love the results, truck drives so much better.

Revs a bit high on the highway - 3000@70, 3200@75. But that’s no big deal, not like the 2GR doesn’t secretly want to rev anyways. The ultimate plan is 255/75R17 (32.1”) tires, but I’m not in a rush to change to them either. I really like the around town drive of the stock tires and 5.29s and am willing to sacrifice some high highway rpm for the performance for the time being.

Truck is going into the shop on Monday to have 5.29s installed :bananadance: , been wanting them for so long. They will also be installing a set of Icon UCAs so we can get the alignment on the front dialed in finally.. Paid the truck off end of last year so it’s going to start getting blessed with some things lol. Also got a new set of wheels and tires ready to be put on, going from a 265/75r16 to 285/75r16

Just Bought my Nitro 5.29s. I'm going to try to book the install with @Sibibuilt but they're promoting revolution gears. Based on the forums, I've only been able to read about how the only issue is noise with the Nitro Gears. My question is whether or not I should resell my Nitro gears to go with Revolution gears or stick with the Nitro Gears? No need to question whether or not I'm a novice, I am... I just want to make sure that I won't need to replace them after installing. Any info is much appreciated and thanks in advance!

I think it’s mostly an install issue, but Nitros are well known for noise, Revolutions are less known for noise. My Revolution 5.29s are silent. I know they were setup right. I’m sure a less precise setup could cause noise on them too though.

any issues? I’m going to ECGS and plan a similar drive back. 130 miles one way.
    Thanks.

Nope gears have been in 9-10 months now. 10k miles or so. I think the gears have actually quieted down some....not that they were ever really loud, but at certain speeds you could hear them if you'd listen for them. Same as my factory gears. ECGS does perfect work.

It's just a really shitty drive home if you do the break in correctly.

Lot of info on here and I'm still unsure if I should go 4.88 or 5.29.

I have a 2023 DCLB OR with truck bed camper, sliders and gear usually adding 500lb of constant weight. Tires are little more then 32" for KO2s
pizza cutters (255/75/17), since it's a new truck I can't rule out the possibility of changing out bumpers but I really don't see us going larger then a true 33" since we do drive this car around town a few days out of the week besides weekend trips to try and keep performance. Currently in bay area but we do travel up and down the coast if terrain helps.

Lol on the drive home….. I’ve considered hauling it back just to get it over with.
Thanks for the response though sounds like ecgs is my best bet. Thanks for the info - I’m doing mine really soon.

I’ve had 5.29’s before. Never regretted it. The difference isn’t huge between 4.88 and 5.29 but the 5.29’s will future proof your taco and still be fine now with your set up as is. I base this on my experience and all the info in this thread. Go for it bud.
