@JustDSM Does HPTuners not offer unlimited credits anymore? I was thinking that I already spent $200 on credits for the Tacoma, I need to spend $200 more for the Tundra, and I also have a JK that I may want to mess with, and who knows what in the future. But I can't find that option anymore on their site

I apologize for the delay in replying, but I can say Barrett will 100% take care of you without a doubt.

The URD cam gears are a great modification for the early 1GR's I've found them to be quite helpful in improving the knock threshold of the engine specifically in the areas this engine is most knock prone. This allows you to be a little more aggressive with the tuning if you opt for a custom tune, otherwise they are a great drop in modification for those who may find lesser quality fuel in the tank during road trips to unfamiliar places.

The gears can be run without a specific tune for them as mentioned above, however there is a little bit of power than can be extracted if tuned specifically for them over just dropping the gears in alone. The best place to start is just schedule a custom tune with Barrett and inform him/us of your modifications. We'll apply our baseline settings for the initial tune and over the course of a few revisions/datalogs, we'll dial it in for your particular combination/fuel.

There really aren't any other prereq's for the tune at your level, but I actually would recommend an intake contrary to popular opinion. Our testing has shown the factory filter to be quite restrictive. Here's a back to back test of simply removing the OE air filter (leaving the stock intake/secondary filter in place):

Quite the restriction.. I'd recommend the aFe Stage 2 Si airbox and their dry element filter. It's what I ran in my personal '15. It's the ONLY intake I've tested that does not screw up the MAF calibration. It also draws cold air from the fender area just like OEM.

The only applications they've ever done "unlimited" credits for are some of the early GM applications. Once you spend something like 30 credits on a specific ECU you can unlock the "unlimited" credits option. But that's only been for a few select ECU's, never any of the Toyota applications. They are a pay as you play option just like VFTuner.

For the Toyota applications, anytime you change one or more of the following, you will need to license: Cal ID, VIN and/or MPVI2/3 serial number

Think of the bold above as the "love triangle".

Thanks for the info @JustDSM, I’ve been in contact with @Truck_Norris discussing the pros and cons of premium fuel with the tune as well. Looking forward to this one!

To clarify on the intake recommendation, this is specific to the 2nd Gen Tacoma, correct? 3rd Gen factory intakes seem to be more than sufficient in testing to date.

Ahhh, for some reason I thought I had seen the option before but I probably just misread and misremembered. Thanks for explaining!

Correct! This is a 2G recommendation only. The filter size and airbox design on the 2G leaves a bit on the table, even with an otherwise stock vehicle.

As a 2nd gen is incrementally modded, the OE intake will present a bigger restriction. The 3G should remain stock down to the filter. At 370+whp, there was zero gain with a open intake.

@JustDSM I was told for the tundras that the cam gear isn't necessary since the camshaft can be adjusted to do the same, with the tuner. Do you guys do that with the big T tunes?

With a dual vvti engine, there’s no need to modify the cam gears. The early 1gr only has vvti on the intake cam. With the way the cams are timed on that engine they benefit from a slight regarding to improve evacuation of the combusted gases from the chamber.

The aFe Stage 2 Si airbox isn't California "CARB" compliant, so aFe won't sell it to CA residents. (Same with the listing on Amazon Prime.) Any recommendations for a CARB-compliant intake for '12-'15 2nd gens that might approximate the modest but notable gains the aFe Stage 2 Si offers?

I don’t think there is an official CARB approved for 12-15 is there? It’s doable, but you need to relocate the SAIS pump out of the way, which is why some of them don’t list as compatible.

Quick check-in...just got a tune from @cemented since he was in the area. Cool dude to work with and very patient lol. I ended up with the mild/medium (9.0) as med/spicy was a bit too jumpy for me at lower speeds. Initial thoughts...night & day difference with no more gear hunting. Quicker off the line and much smoother shifting. I've got a trip to Mammoth this weekend so I can do some extensive testing rather than just highway miles.

    Cheers!

Thank you x1000 for the detailed info and suggestions man! I hadn't found the AFE intake in my research, so that's definitely going on the list. Honestly not a bad price either for a bit of a proven performance increase.
Stoked to work with Barret and see what we can do with the truck. I have been logging some baseline data with Torque pro, so it will be cool to see the deltas afterward.

    Happy holidays!

Just bought my HPTuners credits, and fired off an email to you guys about the Tundra. I'm hoping to start my install in the next week or two. Just waiting for the custom s/c pulleys to arrive!

Wicked Mat Tuning put in some quality work troubleshooting some issues with improper installations of a previous shops work. Correcting the install issues that were present in some of the fuel system components made it possible for us to properly dial in the setup. OTT was able to wrap up the calibration for this 2017 Tundra today during a remote tuning session. Pretty sweet combo that's a blast to drive! The Tundra was fitted with the TVS1900 Magnuson SC with Pulley Upgrade (12-13psi peak) Longtube Headers / Full Exhaust Prospeed 4.5" CAI Prospeed Fuel Rails / Chassis Lines Aeromotive FPR 750cc Injectors Walbro 450lph Pump Radium Fuel Pump Relay Kit / 10ga Wiring / Fuel Hanger Stud Kit.

Baseline run on this truck (bone stock) was 289hp/307tq on premium pump fuel. We landed at 535hp/555tq all said and done.

    “From slow to woah!”

Cross-posted to Tundras.com; guys are impressed! Do you know what altitude they dyno'd at?

That's a pretty similar setup to what I'll have. Except ProSpeed's airbox leaves a lot to be desired in the way of quality and engineering. It pulls in a ton of engine heat since the box isn't sealed. And tbh, their stuff is overpriced.

It was functionally sea level being in RI.

We weren’t consulted with the parts selection, but rather just asked to tune it.

The AFR was ~11.0-10.8 at the top end.

Amazing that the MAX torque is waaaaay down in the RPM band, sort of looks like a diesel in that respect.

Hello, what is needed and pricing to flash and data log my own truck instead of meeting up with someone from the tuning network? I'm a Toyota tech and I am familiar with Toyota reflashes and have used vf tuners when installing Magnuson s/c on customer trucks. My truck is a 15 taco 4.0 with a drop in filter, cat back exhaust, cam gears, 33in tires, 4.10 gears and modifications may change as the build progresses.
    Thanks
