Hello y’all, I have a 14 TRD OR with 91K miles. Decided to buy some takeoffs from a brand new 2022 on marketplace. Went to my dealer and did it in steps.

First I put on new 4600 on myself on the rear I got at 4WP. Not really any chance to ride quality.

Then I went to my local dealer to install 3rd gen leafs and the ride quality improved dramatically; I mean WOW. I definitely underestimated just how important those are for ride quality, definitely worth the $100 I paid for them.

Finally I went to my dealer and swapped out the front coil over assemblies from the same tacoma that the leafs came from aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand my ride went to Sh*t. I mean absolute trash, the same If not worse than before I did anything to her and I don’t know why. On the same dealer trip that I swapped the front assemblies I also swapped the front inner and outer tie rods, they were SEIZED; I thought they where trying to jip me buuuut I went back there and saw how much they had mamed both outer tie rods trying to get them to turn out for the alignment so I said fuck it I can swing it.

Anyway, has anyone has a similar experience when using 3rd gen suspension parts on your second gen? My wife is about to need this truck for some serious commuting for a while and if she has a bad time with all the bounce she’s definitely not gonna let me mess with her truck again (or maybe she will finally let me get her a 200 series)

    thanks in advance

I did the 3rd gen swap into my 2014 TRD Sport when I owned it. Other than the ride improving because the shocks were new, nothing changed. Somebody screwed something up on yours.

A 3rd gen 4wd front end is approx 600lbs heavier which is why people use 3rd gen take off’s to gain a little lift. So, the spring rate could just be way too stiff for what you want

Seriously? Where does that much weight difference come from?

I did. It was during the install that we ran into the seized tie rod issue so they def did that and it doesn’t walk in either direction when I let go

not sure, i can’t remember but that is what drove people to grab the 3rd gen stuff for 2nd gens because it was a cheap way to level a front end. you can see the difference here :

agreed. the 3rd gen has a stiffer front spring. so thats why your ride is worse now.

rear leaf springs are the same.

Exactly what I said, Pics of the struts installed in the front. Clearly showing the whole assembly, spring perch and top plate.

What tire pressure are you running? Make sure the dealer didn't fill them to 40 psi or something silly.

Let us see pics of the install. Sounds like they fucked it up. Sure the 3rd gen coils are 700lb vs the Gen 2 450lb coils but they should not make it ride like crap.

lol im sure its not that big of a difference as you stated. think 2nd gen is somewhere in the 570lbs or something like that. (looked it up) the stock trd springs are 540# @ 14 inches.

so going from 540lbs spring rate to a 710lbs spring rate will make a difference.

i went from 650lbs spring rate down to a 600lbs and noticed a difference.

but op.....im pretty sure its your spring rate that is causing a difference in the stiff ride. you said it yourself that it was all good untill they installed the front assembly.

    Whoa

It's almost like there's a reason high quality parts cost more, have thicker shock body, and drive better

Funny because I had exact same setup. 3rd Gen TRDOR coil overs, 4600 shocks in rear, and 3rd Gen take off leaf springs. The rear always felt awesome. The front rode like a dump truck. Literally every single imperfection in road was a jarring bump. The springs are over 700 lb rate and really you want something around 500-600 for a better ride. I installed new struts and the ride smoothed right out

Idk man even with the 700lb coils it still gave a very comfortable ride. All I could say that it was a bit more firm but still a soft ride with better handling with the Gen 3 TRD OR front shock assembly. It should not be giving anyone a rough ride even with the 700lb coil springs unless he got the TRD Sport shocks. Those do ride like crap. I would hope OP could just post a pic so we can see if they installed anything wrong or if they installed the red/blue sport shocks in the front.

that’s because the 3rd Gen coils are significantly heavier than 2nd Gen coils (2nd Gen: 600#, 3rd Gen: 700#)

the front end on the 2nd Gen Tacoma is 300lbs lighter than the 3rd Gen.
