I have a 2022 Tacoma 4x4, V6, AT. It is the SR model so it does not have locking differential. I am going to order the Nitro 5.29 gear package and they highly recommend adding an limited slip differential. My truck is not taken off road. It's a commuter that might see snowy roads a couple of times a year. I'm not looking to spend money unnecessarily. Do I need to add LSD?

    Thank You

I’d say 5.29 gearing for a non-offroad commuter is already firmly into the realm of spending money unnecessarily. If you don’t think you need the benefits of a LSD the don’t buy one.

    Why regear at all?

LSD is not needed on these trucks, and it just adds another point of failure and wear that's not needed unless you ran it hard.

You see a lot of failures from the trucks re-gearing on here if you read through, probably <5% but unless the shop is 100% reputable I wouldn't put my trucks reliability on the line.

The brochure for the 2022 Tacoma says it comes standard with Auto-LSD.
Not sure why you’d want to add a mechanical system to it?

I’d argue you don’t need either of those things.

You can add a lunchbox locker like a lock right easily if you ever decide you want one, you just remove the spider gears and the locker takes their place. At least easy in the sense you still have to pull your rear diff, but won’t have to set up gears again.

edited, thank you Shimstack for the correct information

A lock right is neither a limited slip nor similar to one. It is a locker and thus not equivalent to a limited slip.

Thank you all for the information. I hear ya about feeling it is not necessary. It is just a preference in terms of the re-gear. The truck is a dog on the highway and the downshifts caused by minimal throttle is irritating. So, its just a preference thing.

Regarding the LSD the Nitro site says "The 8” rear differential found in 3rd gen Tacoma has been known to be quite weak. We recommend at minimum upgrading to the Nitro Helical Gear LSD unit as a strength and traction upgrade: TORS-TV6-30". So, maybe they are saying it should have a stronger LSD than what the truck comes with?

Talk to them about gear ratios. 5.29 may be a little short.

I actually went 5.29s on 33s and it feels awesome paired with the kdmaxx 9.0 tune. Truck is so much more enjoyable to drive. I kinda don’t want to even go up to 35s

Different strokes for different folks but highway performance/efficiency struggles too much IMO.

do you own a 3rd gen? 5.29s are great even with 31s. 33s and 5.29s are the go to choice. the autos should have come factory with 4.30s like the 6mts did.

    I dont, I have a second gen. I drove a 3rd gen with 4.88's and 33's for a few months though.

I dunno man, I’m going 75 in the at 2100 rpm. Drove back to vegas from socal and averaged 16mpg. I would average 13 on that drive normally.

maybe if your lucky enough to live down south with those high speed limit highways i can see. but up here in canada ive never seen a speed limit over 100kmh (60mph). the 3.5 does much better with the little higher rpms.

Thanks again. According to what I have read I should be at about 2200 rpm at 70 mph in 6th gear with the 285’s. Does that sound about right? It’s much higher than stock but I can live with that. I wouldn’t want it to be higher than 2200 though.

Also disagree. I'm on 5.29s and 285s and it's just about right. The truck still downshifts too easily/early on the highway but it's much less of a dog than it was before.

Fair enough like I said people have preferences. Initial recommendation was just to talk to the gear company. They'll know better then any of us.

As far as the LSD they’re trying to upsell you on, I haven’t heard of one single case of the spider gears (which is what the LSD would replace) failing in a 3rd gen Tacoma. I’m sure it’s happened, like any other vehicle. But this smells like bullshit to me. They’re trying to make more money. OP, you don’t off road, you don’t intend to off road (I think 5.29s is a bit silly on a commuter/DD, but it’s your truck)… you don’t need their LSD to “strengthen your diff”. LSDs aren’t the best choice even if you wanted it to off road (just get a locker in that case), and it will be useless to you if you don’t need it for traction.
