So after waiting for 3 months now and not a word of a allocation from my dealer I’ve found exactly what I wanted coming to another dealership. Issue is it’s almost 2k miles away…. Sure I can snag a plane ticket and go get it but is that a bad idea to just hop on the highway and bring it home ? I’ve always broken engines in with varying rpm’s etc for the first 1000.

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
Vary the roads you take. Don't travel 100% on the interstates. Take the less traveled roads and see the country. Play tourist in some areas. Check out the obscure diners & greasy spoons on the way. Enjoy your new truck.

Before you even debate the trip you might want to contact the dealer and see if it's even an option. Some dealers won't sell to buyers outside their area.

The transmission is going to hunt between 4,5,6 the entire trip home on the interstate, as far as the engine is concerned it won't be running at a constant speed ever.

Engine break in isn't really all that important nowadays. Don't overload the engine, but give it some gas/change speed every now and again on your drive. Vary speeds a bit and you'll be fine.

Break in isn't the same as it used to be. The truck comes with syn oil already in it. The old break in rules were to never install syn until broken in on dino.

But as others suggest, IF they will sell it to you, just vary the route home.

2000 miles .. a Tacoma is not worth that sort of trip… that’s lunacy.

Unless you’re in Alaska or something you should be able to find something local

    Oh look, another mod....
If the truck is that far away, it's probably best to look into having it shipped to you. If you factor in: Your time, Gas, and the amount of miles you'll put on it (depreciation/wear&tear), having it shipped for a reasonable price might be the best thing to do.

I flew to Austin two years ago for my daughter's Tacoma. She was stationed in Okinawa at the time so she needed our help.
It was a long day but the truck's transmission didn't "hunt for 4,5,6..." or anything strange. It was just like driving my 2nd gen, but tighter. And surprisingly, the engine hasn't fallen out of it yet.

IF they will sell you the truck, I'd say go for it. Don't over think it.

We tried this two years ago but the dealer wouldn't ship one without some sort of trade back from our local dealer.

No. I meant YOU paid to ship it to your house. I bet you could get it done for....$900-ish. The drawback is, you are on their timeline, so you may not get the truck for a few weeks.

I disagree with this. I drove my daughter's 2020 home from Austin, Texas to southern Indiana and didn't notice the transmission shifting any more than any other car I drive.
The OP didn't even mention where he'd be buying it and driving it. It might be downhill all the way.

My father recently purchased a truck with 8 miles on the odometer over 1K miles away in Des Moines, Iowa. He claims that a long road trip is great for seating the piston rings correctly, preventing sticky pistons down the line. The truck is a 7.3L V8 Ford, but I would imagine that same logic applies. Best of luck with your search/decision!

Shipping 2,000 miles will probably be minimum $1,500. I shipped a car from Pa to Oklahoma and it was $1,200. Factor in 800 additional miles and a larger vehicle I wouldn’t be surprised if they quote you $2,000.

Yeah so I’m in pa and truck would be in Colorado. I have def considered the shipping it route as well I’m going to give a call in a little bit and see if they will even sell it as some have mentioned. I’ve run into that already with dealerships that are closer and they wouldn’t

If they will sell to you, just drive it home and maybe plan to stop and see some sites on such a long drive across a beautiful country.

Agreed. Would be a very cool road trip back from Colorado. Would have been nicer in the summer, but hopefully the truck is a 4x4.

Dads all full of shit, what he thinks was common thinking in the 60s but just as refrigerators made ice boxes obsolete the thoughts on break in are a thing of the past.
