Bummer, was a bolt somewhere else on the bike you could steal for a run? I lost a bolt in the center of my shifter and found out it’s the same a a water bottle bolt.

I’ve been working on showing him how to use the mini-strider, and he just learned to walk a couple of weeks ago, he’s barely 13 months.
Today, he used one of his dozen words to pull it over to me and say, “Bike!”
I put him on it, and he just smiled and started “riding” on his own.

Not really. I also lost the pinch shim. Since it's a thru-axle, I just checked it every couple of segments while coming down flow and it held tight.

 

Well figure its time to try replacing my derailleur hanger - have reset the drive train more than once (limit screws and indexing) and can't get it fluidly shift between all the gears. Either I can get the high gears to work, or the lower gears, but not both.

Part that has me baffled is how the hanger could of gotten bent. I am pretty religious about laying the bike down drive side up, and haven't had an 'incident' that would of bent the hanger. Seems like they can get bent pretty easily from normal use? Luckily when I ordered my bike, they sent a few extra hangers so I can replace without having to order more parts, just odd to say the least. Desperate to fix it though - last few rides have been a mash fest on the shifting and constant on the fly adjustments of cable tension to get the gears to quiet down and hold a gear when under load.

 

What drivetrain and did you set your B-limit? If its too far out it can put extra tension on the chain.

 

A Sram GX 12 speed.

I even went as far as depressurizing the rear shock and using a ratchet strap to put the drive train under load to set the B-limit. Figure the next cheapest option is to swap the hanger and try again, if it still is giving issues, then i will take more drastic approaches lol. I have been against the AXS derailleur on both the cost and needing a battery, but when running into indexing issues, I could see the benefit of gear by gear micro-adjustments. Also coming across decent sales on the AXS upgrade kit, but hesitant as I tend to ride some rowdy trails and would hate to dink a rock and throw away $450.

 

I use this tool on SRAM 12 speeds, your LBS should have a bunch of spares. It gets you in the neighborhood and may need some very minor adjustments to get it precise. If your limits and B screw are good, its usually tension related. That being said your hanger could be tweaked.

 

Check your hanger before replacing it. You’d be surprised how easy it is to knock these buggers off just a little…

i second checking the b limit with their tool. theres an older style floating around but the newer styles is pretty spot on. i setup my gx on my patrol and nx on my hardtail. now i only run into tension issues when my cable gets worn

 

I used to mix Stans and Orange all the time on both the HT and the Intense. All were running 30 mm wheels at 20-24 psi with Maxxis tires (Ikon, Ardent, Ardent Race, Aggressor), wheels - DT Swiss, Kappius (carbon), Syncros) with no issues on mounting nor leaking. I switched to Kappius Goldilocks with good results.

Mixing old sealant with fresh will give you subpar coagulant performance. A Turkey Baster is a good way to get the old stuff out sans the mess and clean up.

also second checking your b-tension. But also check your hangar with a DAG. Like @Rexfordian13 said...it doesn't take much to knock a hangar out of alignment. Takes just a few seconds to fix if it's just a mm off in one direction or another.

 

Appreciate all the insight - went through the B-tension with the supplied SRAM plastic tool shown above. Hoping I have a local person who has a derailleur alignment tool I can borrow for a few.

 

Yeah, DAG or one of these https://www.wolftoothcomponents.com/collections/tools/products/pack-hanger-alignment-tool if your hangar bolt can accept it like this. (not all bikes can use this system). If you were around my parts, i'd totally let you borrow my tools.

I got frustrated enough at one point that i just splurged on a DAG. How many times have i used it since? never. lolol. Easy enough to do at the shop while i'm doing other things with the bike or i just haven't had to do it at home. lol

 

Make sure your cable moves freely throughout the range as well. I once went through my bike the night before a race and re-zip tied the cables. Got one wrong and had the zip tie too tight, ended up with only 3 usable gears in the race. I just pretended I was racing single speed.

 

oh yeah, that's a good point. make sure the housing is good and the cable is good. and there tehre isn't a weird kink somewhere. Definitely had something similar happen before. weird kink in the housing led to VERY erratic shifting. couldn't nail it down till i took things apart and redid the housing and found a really bad kink

 

Thanks, I added the new sealant this weekend… admittedly it had been a very long time since it did anything with sealant, like May of ‘21 when I replaced the tires to go to Sedona.

No turkey baster needed, it came out of the tire with the consistency of an oyster. Just a gross blob.
