It took only 42 days from placing the order with the dealer to driving off with it; not too bad. I like it! My first impressions:

--25 MPG on the first tank of gas. This is good.

--Quieter and smoother than my old 1st gen, more of a car-like ride.

--The proportions are better--it's sized just right. I always thought the 1st gens cab was a bit too high for the width of the body.

--The access cab rear doors that open are a big improvement. It was a pain sometimes to load up the backseat area on the 1st gen.

--The 2.7 seems to have more power over the 2.4.

--My biggest beef is the lack of color choices--Toyota makes about 10 shades of blue and you can't get one of them on an SR5 base access cab. So I stayed with silver, like the last one...

That's it for now. Oh, and don't they smell great when new?

    This will start a shitfest.

FWIW, other than the bloated size, I agree with you.

Gone over the Top for a 5-lug..
I just picked my new 2010 model up off the dealer lot, 2 hours ago.

I don't have a base of reference over the first generation, but i do remember my first japanese pickup from 20 years ago, an '85 Nissan 720D. I also had an '88 F150 for a number of years. Both manual transmission, base models for their time.

    There is just no comparison.

I've also got the 2.7, mated to a 5 speed manual. While the shift throws are long, they are very precise. Clutch engagement is smooth and intuitive.

Excellent acceleration, while at the same time perfectly happy to idle along in the 1200-1500 rpm rev range.

The interior, while perhaps a bit plasticy, is well put together and makes sense. Everything is there where it makes sense, and within easy reach. Nothing is hidden, or looks like an afterthought in placement.

All i can ask for with this 2nd generation Tacoma, is the reputation for Toyota reliability for their light pickups to be true. If it comes to pass, i think i'll be perfectly happy with this truck for the long term, based on my needs and usage.
