OEM Denso ignition coil lifespan

Well, after 15 years and almost 1/2 million miles (492,000) I had the first OEM Denso ignition coil go bad. I gotta say, not bad

They don't fail very often as long as the spark plugs are kept up with, that's why it always amazes me how many people want to change them as "preventative maintenance" and replace them with some shitty aftermarket ones. Same thing with injectors.

When I worked on German cars I had a Porsche turbo cayenne owner bring in 8 coils and 8 spark plugs.

They were 45$ coils each from the dealer, he said it was so cheap and they fail so often, why not.

I've never seen that again, it's crazy how good Japanese coils are compared to zee germans.

On the older 2GR's I'll call 6 coils at once, but its usually caused by overdue plugs killing the coils.

 

Yea if it was a Ford I'd say keep a spare or 2 in the glovebox but Toyota, I rarely change one on them.

 

Usually the boot starts arcing before the coil goes bad

I replaced 4 coils (and plugs) on a 04 prius the other day. 399,000 miles original coils

 

Pssh it was only running half the time
