Yikes..though it could be they see the low cost of housing versus other states and don't think about the other costs of living outside of a mortgage or rent.

Yikes, my 2 vehicles (granted, 13 and 9 years old) combined I think aren't even 150.

 

Ooops, I mistyped..property tax is what I was getting at.

 

… chuckles nervously in North East property tax values …

 

Ooh, this is post 750. What do I win for making it this far? Cheaper car registration? Cheaper property taxes? A cookie?

I still don’t know what I got and I’m at 11k.

I don’t know anyone that has one.

Anybody remember the old house on the Navy base that got nailed by a truck last month? My parent speculated that it took so long to remove the truck because the house was at risk of collapsing, but they managed to extract the totaled truck without doing anymore damage to the house than has already been done...

 

Considering that these houses were probably built 70 to 100 years ago, haven't been significantly updated since the 1980s or 1990s, and have been vacant for over a decade, the interior seems to be in decent condition...

 

You can tell, even by looking at pictures taken with an iPhone, that this is a very solidly-built house!

 

The electricity has probably been shut off to the house for the entire time it's been vacant, but I'll bet the ceiling fan still works!

 

The rumor I heard was that the pipes in all of these houses had burst, the basements had flooded, and they have significant mold problems. From this angle, the interior seems to be in surprisingly decent condition; I believe that the water was likely shut off, which kept the pipes from bursting. We have had a few brutally cold winters over the years, so the pipes most certainly would have burst...

 

This appears to have been the living room, and if you look closely you can see an HVAC thermostat on the wall by the staircase; I kinda sorta hopped the barricade a couple weeks ago and inspected the central air-conditioner on the side of the house. It is a 1990-era York unit, and not a heat pump. Given that the indoor unit is located up in the attic, I believe that there is boiler (either gas or oil) in the basement; I have no idea whether this thermostat controls the A/C or heat...

 

It not a particularly big house, and I believe that the kitchen is just to the right of the stairs...

 

They probably had to have structural engineers inspect it before removing the truck.
