550rpm at idle vibration with foot on brake

Something tells me 550 is too low. If I take my foot off the brake with ebrake on it bounces back up to 650 and the vibration goes away. I’ve had this truck for about two months now and it’s been doing it ever since I got it. 2012 4.0 with 110,000 miles. No check engine light. I cleaned maf and throttle body, also changed the air filter. Long term fuel trim on both banks at idle sits around +7. Are there any common areas to check for air leaks on these tacomas? I cannot hear any hissing around the engine bay. Thank you all.

Have you tried resetting the throttle position sensor. Easy fix if that is it

When you cleaned the MAF, did you unplug it? I had that same issue (interestingly after I disconnected the battery). I was checking the MAF and it seemed like just unplugging it and plugging it back in fixed it. Maybe clean the connecter?

I did try to reset it but I’m not sure if it worked so I think I will try again, maybe I didn’t do it right. Yes I did unplug the connector when cleaning the maf. What idle are you guys at in drive with foot on the brake? Thank you

Did you clean the throttle body?

Yup, the throttle body is cleaned I took the whole thing off and got it real good. I wish I had one of those smoke machines. Hopefully it’s not a brake booster issue.

I would think you would have lean codes if it was a vacuum leak big enough to affect the idle.

Also idle learn doesn't begin until the coolant temp reaches 174F

Ok so should I try to reset once the engine is fully warmed up?

The first sign you will get with worn plugs in these trucks (4.0L) is a rough idle. Give it a little throttle and it cleans up.
It’s odd that it’s only a low rpm issue, but there been more than a few people have this problem and new plugs fixed it.

When was the last time the plugs were changed? Toyota says change them every 30k.

The idle should be around 650-700 rpm in neutral.

As for idle. Here is what mine is
(You aren’t the first to ask about a low idle)

It will learn on it's own but the learning process won't begin until the coolant reaches that temp.

Didn't think about that but then again I change mine every 30k like your supposed to.:D

The dealer that sold me the truck replaced the plugs before it was sold which is strange because on the carfax it shows the previous owner replaced them 20k miles before that. Seems like they were trying to solve this issue. So yeah the plugs are pretty much new. Maybe it’s a completely normal rpm, it’s just a pretty noticeable drop once the brake is depressed along with vibration felt in the steering wheel. My wife’s venza rpm does not drop at all in drive when the brake is applied, it sits right at 650. I’m going to do the reset and I will let you guys know how it goes. I know it’s a pretty petty issue but things like this leave me unsettled

Since the truck is new to you, you probably wouldn't have seen a difference when cold starting the truck. I've got an exhaust on my truck, and when I had this issue, it was a noticeably weaker start. IIRC my truck normally shoots up to ~1700 rpm when it cold starts. When I had that issue, it would only go up to ~1100 rpm.

I say the RPM is normal.
That is based off my truck.
    Engine is warm.

I would suggest pulling one spark plug to see what they put in it.
From what I've read (here), some of these engines don't like anything but good ole copper plugs. If they are iridium, it may be a contributing factor.

Did they use copper straight out of the factory?

Same mine has been idling around 500-600rpm when warm and in drive at a stop for years... I worried about it for a little while but basically have forgotten about it now. I cleaned the MAF, reset position sensor, and did all the usual recommendations and nothing changed.

I'm going through this exact same thing, right now. The spark plugs were overdue for changing based on the condition, so did that and expected the issue to go away. But, it showed back up. It doesn't happen every time.

I've had the truck for ten years and this is the first time I've had this issue appear. Checked for codes and had none.

Had wondered if it was a computer thing and after the plugs change, the computer would adjust itself (or however that works) but no luck.

Will keep reading. Wanted to give this a bump in case there are other suggestions out there.
