I picked ours up out of town and as someone mentioned it shifted all over the place on the highway so varying RPM comes natural to this truck.

Yeah I know about that trans crap haha I had a 2016 lease and I’ve wanted another one ever since turning it in. It’s been kinda tricky to find a trd offroad in a access cab lunar rock with the packages I want.

Just go for it!!! You don't need to have other's opinions or the justification for it. It sounds like a great excuse for a "road trip". See the sights....stay off the interstate...enjoy the scenery. "Roll the Bones", get out there and see and do what there is. The engine will be fine as long as you're not screaming along like everyone else. Change it up, and just enjoy. Good luck

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
What @winkel is talking about is that dealers trade vehicles on their lot for whatever vehicle is on the lot at the other end. As long as it's in demand in their area of course.
Realistically though, it's like walking into the dealer that's 2K miles away and buying your Taco. I suspect that dealer just didn't want to deal with the hassle of shipping it without putting a few extra $$$ in his pocket.

I bought in PA, drove it home to AZ. Did not want to wait the 3 weeks the earliest shipper could pick it up. who knows what might happen to that truck sitting at the dealer for 3+ weeks. looked for months for something to buy that was closer but blurple/3rd pedal/moonroof never came up in nationwide searches when I was looking a few months ago.

i bought my truck in late September and have ~3,000 miles on the truck here in Dec. if this truck was local, it would probably have < 800 miles on it. if you're ok with spinning up the odo 2,000+ miles on your new truck just to get it home and you really cannot find something acceptable to buy closer to home, then go for it.

if I had to do it again, I would be more prepared for the rock chips. Its really hard to drive this far staying far enough away from the big rigs and the 'stuff' that gets kicked up in their wake. I cringed when I heard an impact knowing full well it was going to leave a mark. Maybe buy a cheap bra to cover up the entire front. Or a layer or two or three of painter's tape for the the entire front, hood, and the frame around the front windshield. I have a chip in the bumper under a headlight that touch-up paint helps but it definitely is still there. Tape up the entire roof, yes I found (and heard) rock chips up there. Definitely tape up the painted side of the side view mirrors. Got a couple of chips on the pax side.

Bypass all of the above if rock chips don't bother you.

oh and don't forget about floor mats and mud flaps. I asked for the mud flaps to be installed (not sure if they really help with rock chips but I figured why not) before i picked it up but forgot about the floor mats. picked up the $30 special at big Wally before heading back. 2,000 miles is an awfully long trip to have shoes grinding dirt into the carpet all the way home. I look at my weatherTechs now and it's surprising how much dirt these things accumulate.

Are there no other automobile options locally? I would never drive that far for a truck unless it was some rare collectible and I was a collector. Medium sized trucks are a dime a dozen. This supply chain crisis is making people nutty. No offense intended.

If I was he’ll bent on a taco right now and none were available I would consider buying a cheap beater and waiting out the supply chain crisis.

Sounds like you got the break-in drive down pat, IDK if you’re saving anything or not. if not, then you’re loosing quite a bit of $$ on the trip.
In other words, I hope its worth it.

If you really need the vehicle badly, that’s one thing. But if you can wait a little longer, maybe you ought to consider waiting and save.

The last thing to consider is since you’re already conscious enough to observe best industry standards by following proper break-in procedure, changing the oil & filter to rid those engine break-in particles after break-in goes hand in hand. And that maybe a complexity on the road.

    Best of luck

As others have said, 2k miles is quite the drive and probably a bit of overkill unless the specific Tacoma build you want is some ultra rare combo or something. If you call around you can probably find an allocation coming in to reserve that is close to or matches what you want and is closer to your home.

I had to drive an hour each way to pick mine up a few days ago and I white knuckled it all the way home on the highway worried about rocks getting kicked up by other vehicles while I tried to baby the braking and acceleration and keep my speed variable to move the rpm’s around as per the break in suggestions. I would not want to do that for 2,000 miles on my first days owning a Tacoma!

All that being said, a road trip with your new Tacoma would be a blast. Go for it if it sounds fun to you!

Did the OP ever find out if the dealer would sell to him?

They are going to sell it to him.

I recently bought a new car out of state and the dealer told me now days they do most of their business online and sell to people all over the country. That is was the nature of the industry now days.

I spec’d the car I bought on the manufacture’s website and didn’t speak to anyone until I was handing the dealership a check 3 months later. It was really nice.

Have you been living under a rock? Inventory levels suck everywhere. I had to go 700 miles to find my truck granted it was a MT in a specific color.

So I bought my 2022 in Austin and had to drive it back to Houston. About 170miles, and I played the game of varying the speed the entire time and not going over 55-60mph. It was a real pain. There were a few times I caught myself hitting 70mph for a second before I backed off. I can’t imagine doing that for 2000 miles. Also keep in mind no sudden stops and no use of cruise control. Unless you’re willing to stop often, maybe only drive about 400 miles a day, I’d say that’s way too much risk on a new vehicle, and it’ll get old fast for you.

Sounds like a fun trip. If you can swing the cost of fuel/food for three days, I'd say go for it.

I live in Long Island, bought my truck in Mass. Babied it for as long it took to get on a major highway. Then I just drove it like any other vehicle Ive owned.
It survived. Good luck with the truck.
