You know I'm not sure, haven't been down there in forever. The whole state kinda tries to forget about that place as the tanks ruin the local watershed more and more. But there has been a lot of money in the last 10 years going to clean up and relocation efforts.

It must be. Plus stuff from school outreach stuff I guess. Very rarely is it stuff related to what my office works on lol

I did get an engraved yeti 30oz tumbler for participating in an event earlier this year and that's been the best thing out of the last 4 years save for a Nike hoodie but that was just a thank you from one of our team leads rather than a company gift

I don't want things from my work for Xmas, I want time. I want to have the week between Xmas and new years off like other companies in my industry. That would be more meaningful than just about anything the company could give me.

I got a way bigger bonus this year than I did last

tbh I think it has something to do with all the court BS I had to go through earlier this year for the company

Damn, I can't believe these servers keep dropping like flies. How do they kill so many SSDs and ram too?

Same, PTO is the perfect gift as far as I'm concerned. We got a bonus this year which was nice, but when I changed positions this last month I also haggled for more PTO and got a bit more. Tiny steps, hard to bump and nudge forward in public education just because of the state set pay scales.

We did a system refresh this year and got a bunch of systems that came with NVMe drives, so now we have 240gb Crucial SSDs up the ass around here. Something like 400 extras. I wanna build a stupid raid array or something

Snippet from an email I got from a software vendor today...

    upload_2022-12-20_10-23-23.jpg

This same company changed their entire product's name a year ago. They acquired a company, decided its brand was better, renamed all of their existing stuff to use the newly-acquired brand name. Changed the www domain. Moved all the documentation. Left the namespaces with the old name, thank goodness... but that just means in code-land it still makes more sense to call things by the old name instead of the new one.

    Thrilled.

Mmmm brand engineering. "It's cheaper to change our name than it is to change our products" is about what that e-mail amounts to.

If I can convince the company to stop using this vendor, I will consider my time here a success.

I wonder if they hired a new branding person with a bad case of nih.

We’re getting into software products more and more and they’re leaving the naming up to engineers and programmers so far. It’s going okaaaaay

Years ago, I read that Microsoft's approach to naming their Azure products was to use the most generic name possible... essentially "call it what it is and put Azure in front of it".

If someone came up with an actual product name, they'd be asked "How important is the name to you, really?".

The rationale was that they had to do diligence on the name in every country and language the product would be available in. They'd have to find any potential trademark/copyright issues, make sure it doesn't have any translation quirks or questionable associations or implied meanings.

It sounds like a reasonable strategy... except that Microsoft still insists on constantly renaming things and reshuffling features between products. The phrase "formerly known as" is littered through blog posts and documentation and I don't even know what the things I'm using are called anymore.

Haha. This already bit us once. Had a nice name for a log capture program, turns out it was trademarked, so now it’s just log capture (the artist formerly known as…). Womp womp.

"Log capture" sounds like the name of a software package I'd like to use.
