I have a 2015 TRD Sport. The other day I was low on gas (empty light was on) and filled up. When I went to start the truck immediately after gassing up, it didn’t want to start. I tried three times and on the third try, it finally turned over with the help of a little gas. Got home ok and it started fine the next three times. But on my next trip the check engine light and TRAC OFF light came on and it throws the P0174 code. Truck has been running fine. I ran some sea foam through it and erased the codes. The codes came back after three starts. I just filled up with gas again on a 1/4 tank and the truck didn’t want to start again.

    Any ideas what this is?

    Evap purge valve sticking.

pull the line off that goes to the solenoid prior to filling and reconnect once full to confirm.
It’s the vacuum hose that goes around the oil fill neck

Sounds like either a purge valve that is sticking open or a fuel pump that is on it's way out.
You say it's only hard to start when you fill it with gas?

Purge valve is an easy check, just pull the hose off and unplug the electrical connector (be aware this will set a code for the valve). If vacuum is present at the port with it unplugged and the engine running it's bad.
To check the fuel pump would require a fuel pressure gauge with adapters to tee into the line.

I have learned when my light comes on I have like 1/2 of a gallon. 2013 Gen 2.5 V6. If the new ones are close to the same might have suck some debris into the system even though it's new. Don't let it run that low.

You should have about 3 gallons when the light comes on

This is true if the sending unit is good.

There’s been enough people (on this forum with a Tacoma) run out of gas with an 1/8 tank or more showing on the gauge, that I usually start looking for a pump at 1/4 tank.

Use some straight-jaw clamping pliers and a shop rag to gently clamp off the purge line next time you fill up. Or if you have some vacuum caps use one to cap off the port on the intake

The purge valve may be leaking and flooding fuel vapors into the engine

I'm not as experienced as you guys so just to be clear, I took a pic. But I took off the electrical connector and hose and covered the port I'm pointing to with my finger. With the engine running, there was a vacuum in the port.

Should I just replace the purge valve? And do you guys recommend finding an OEM part or just go to AutoZone to get one?IMG_4172.jpg

That's it, I'd go OEM if you can.

One more question. Do you have an online place you recommend for OEM parts or just pick it up at the dealer?
