Wow, that doesn't sound great. I wonder if their coating material has some sort of rust neutralization agent in it.

I've been considering doing a frame restoration myself (with hot dip galvanization), and if they don't do prep and just coat rust, it could just cause problems or at least more work for me later down the line.

when I brought the truck in the advisor claimed they’d be washing and removing rust from the frame, which was a surprise to me because I thought they’d just apply goop to the inside of the frame. As it turns out I was right. They did not touch the outside at all….not at all. Just applied the goop to sections of the inside and plugs here and there. We’ll see what the long term outcome is in 2026! I’ll be 50.

Hi there I was wondering if any of you know what could be done for my 2008 Toyota Tacoma that got the inspection and was sprayed a couple years ago but now has multiple holes in the frame?
I have also had it undercoated every year since than.

I have contacted Toyota Canada (I live in Ontario Canada) and was told there could be an extension that may cover it but he was unsure. My local dealer told me they can’t do it. But after reading these post I feel that I should be covered under some sort of warranty since what they did to it obviously did not last long. Very frustrating since there are older vehicles out there that will out last my Tacoma. I thought these vehicles we’re supposed to last forever, but anyways anyones ideas would be very helpful. Thank you!

Just confusing since the guy from Toyota told me it was extended for my vehicle till 2023. But maybe he was confused just as much as I am.

They can tell you whatever and be wrong..12 years from in service date. Period. Unless your truck wasnt sold for the first time until 2011, but I highly doubt that. There are alot of people who tried to get Toyota to do something with the same result. zilch...Im hoping for you, but it would be a unicorn if they did something for you, because then they would have to do something for everyone else!

If you dig into the actual process used, that is exactly correct. They only apply the coating to the area(s) that are causing the biggest problem, which would be the boxed sections of the frame. And yes, they do clean and descale that area prior to applying the coating.

As for the long-term effects, look at the bright side, your frame is now warrantied for a much longer period of time than if you had done nothing at all.

If I may offer an opinion based on many years of experience living in the rust belt, undercoating does not stop rust. At best, it prevents it - but only if applied properly. Worse yet, applied incorrectly, undercoating traps moisture and actually promotes rust while hiding it. (Ziebart makes a ton of money applying a crap product incorrectly, then covering up the evil with "free annual resprays.") So, your application of undercoating well after your truck was new (and rust free) was ineffective at best and possibly counter-productive.

As for Toyota extending the program for you, sorry, but that's just not going to happen. You're well out of the program window. Sorry.

FWIW: The dealer I took my truck to last year for the mandatory inspection advised me to bring it in annually at around the same time for an inspection and if needed: re-application of the CRC. I confirmed I understood correctly and documented this. I intend to do this until just before the first-use date in 2026.

Will do. I got the following message from Toyota Frame Settlement. Might want to give them a shout at toyotaframesettlement@epiqglobal.ca. Bold and underline are mine.

    Good Morning,

    Thank you for your email.

Without the VIN we are not able to confirm whether the vehicle would have been covered under this Canadian settlement.

However, the Enhanced Warranty Program for frame corrosion available under this settlement provides the additional coverage only for the later of 12 years from the date of first use or up until July 21, 2019. Given the age of your vehicle, unfortunately it would fall outside of these parameters and there would be no recourse available to you under this settlement.

As the independent third-party administrator appointed by the courts, we are not part of Toyota Canada. You may wish to discuss your concerns with the dealership or Toyota Canada directly. The Toyota Canada Custom Customer Experience Center can be reached at 1-888-869-6828.

    Sincerely,

    Toyota Frame Settlement Administrator

Good luck. I feel your pain, but you're outside the cutoff and nothing you can do or threaten will change that. Sorry.

That's what I've realized. Still waiting for Toyota to give me call. See what they say. I'm going the route of taking it to a local autobody shop to have them remove the junk spray Toyota put on, weld the affected part, paint and then Fluid Film it. I'm still not ready to give up my truck. Just refreshed it with new suspension, changed all fluids, brakes, etc in 2021.

That is what they said to me as well, my truck is a 2008 so it’s past its time. I just want to know my options since the truck will become unsafe soon and I’ll have to solve the problem with a lot of money.

Do any other manufacturers have a frame warranty/recall for rust issues? Or is this just a Toyota thing? Of all the companies in the world that manufacture vehicles... I would have been most surprised by Toyota having a continuing issue as serious as frames that rust out.

I've played around with classic cars my whole life and brought many of them back from the grave. None had frames that were so bad they caused ay concern. Why is Toyota using a design that has issues no other manufacturer has?

And why are owners not up in arms?

I'm glad you took my comments the right way. So many people post in here - with trucks well out of the window - and rail about how unfair Toyota was to them and how they're going to sue Toyota out of existence. Truth be told, twelve years is a pretty solid frame warranty no matter how you look at it. As for suing Toyota, I'm sure any number of lawyers will be more than happy to bill them for a useless effort - while telling them they've got a good chance of winning.

BTW, there is a company now making patch panels for Tacoma frames. This will be not only more cost effective than scratch built, but safer (if properly installed) too.

I try to keep a level head and emotions in check when it comes to inanimate objects the government allows me to own for the time being. I paid $26,700 CDN for my 09 DC OR off the lot during the last economic crisis, by the time I brought it back to Canada all in all it was $30,000 CDN on the nose. 13 years of service, 200,000 miles, she's (I believe mine has a soul) been with me from Ontario to Key West. From Key West to Yellowknife and everywhere in between and never gave me an issue that couldn't be solved. Still running strong (knock on wood) and can use a bit of weld and a frame clean up.

I have NOTHING bad to say about Toyota as a company or the products I purchased from them. They've been more than fair with the frame warranty and if they come back and say, sort it out yourself, that's that. I have friends who have Fords, Chevys and Rams and let's just say - I'm glad I don't have their problems.

I think people fall a little tooooooo deep into the Top Gear Hilux episode/Toyota marketing/urban legend narrative that their Toyota is actually indestructible. Mother nature, user error and neglect always has the final say.

If you have a reference for the patch panels, I wouldn't mind learning more about them.
