I don’t know how much trimming is involved in other axles, but if it’s as much as I did on the super dookies, do tons from the start. Not something I’d want to do twice. Plus the 05 stuff is pretty future proof and can be put under any other crawler/bouncer in the future or retain a bit more value I’d think.

Yeah, they're singlehandedly putting the KP60 and 14b out to pasture

    Dumb bitch

See below. Doesn’t fit with what I’m wanting out of the build.

Ehh, I want to build this runner and I don’t want it on big ass tons and 40’s or 42’s.

Fuck it. Worst case scenario you have some built tons and 40’s for something else. That’s my theory at least. Mine will never see pavement though. It sucked on the road with 35’s before all the links and LT if I’m being honest with myself. I get better mpg, peace of mind and comfort hauling it on the trailer.

I’m building it because I like the chassis, not because I want tons and 40’s.

I need to measure my 9.5s and compare to a d60, I don't think it will be as bad as you are saying.

D60 front axle centerline to bottom of diff is 6.0". (Source billavistas d60 bible) Ill have to measure my junk tonight and compare. I did find a random pirate post that has the landcruiser axle (assuming 40 series) as 5.625" from center of axle tube down to the lowest point of the diff. I'll have to verify on mine but far from a "rock anchor on 37s".

As for a 14b rear, if you can't figure out how to shave that you should not even be attempting an SAS. There is like a million write ups on how to do that and you can shave them down to D44 specs without even messing with the ring gear.

I know @Kerleyfries has to go through the "keeping it Toyota and won't wheel it that hard" right of Toyota owner ship passage, but he will learn he wasted money on Toyota axles after a few seasons of smashing it off rocks and dumping 5k into them to get them as strong as a stock d60. I am proud of him he's not doing the stupidity of trying to make IFS work and down the "LT is just as good as a solid axle in the rocks, as long as you never use the front locker, don't turn and don't hit the gas at all" quagmire.

I’ve considered getting SD axles and shaving and narrowing them, but damn does that seem like a lot of work to run smaller tires lmao.

Yea they are wide as hell, that would be the most annoying part about them. The rear is easy with the cab and chassis 14b, it's that damn front.

Extra width might help keep the big body away from the nasty shit a little better though

    .. it’s a 3rd gen 4runner. It’s practically a side by side.

Never heard anybody say they regretted going with wide axles.

But I've heard many people say wished they went with wider axles after they built their rigs with narrow axles.

    Something to think about!

I would argue the opposite actually. Haven't seen too many chain case failures. That might change now that more people are doing the newly released NWF VF1 doubler setup. But most all T case failures I've seen have been the doubled gear cases

I have mixed emotions about width. There's times it helps and times it hurts for sure. I think there is happy medium to be had from stability and a nimble perspective. I know on some trails like Lion's Den in Harlan, being wide makes it a much more difficult trail.

Don't you have Toyota axles under your truck that have literally never given you any issues on 37's?

It's not just the absolute number on the ground clearance to the lowest point on the center, the shape of a 60/14 is much bulkier and your on bigger axle tubes as well. 60/14b is also between a 500-700lb weight difference to Toyota axles depending on how they are configured.
