I’ve had my king 2.5 RR OEM replacement shocks with factory tune for about 1.5 years and I’ve been somewhat disappointed in their go fast off road performance. I still feel I have to go pretty slow over rough stuff for fear of breaking my spine or the truck. At the same time I didn’t know what to expect going into the purchase. My only reference points are dirt bikes and SxSs and they are definitely in a different league compared to my current taco setup.

I do wonder though how much a difference a different tune could make. My truck is close to stock other than the kings and OME Dakar medium leafs, so it seems reasonable to expect the factory king tune to be near optimal. That is under the assumption that the factory tune is optimized for go fast off road performance though.

I’m no shock tuner, but it seems like either my shocks have too little damping, I just have too little suspension travel, my springs are too stiff, and/or leaf springs just suck for going fast.

My question is, is the King factory tune optimized for driving fast off road or has it been optimized for a mall crawler? And is this even a valid question?

 

It's a great question, and sorta the main reason we do what we do. All shock manufacturers will tune a OEM fit shock for (X) vehicle. Very likely that vehicle is not identical to yours.

 

But like I said, my truck is near stock and I assume the factory tune is for an otherwise stock truck. Is that a poor assumption?

Lots of assumption. Looks like you have a 2020 Truck, but King offers shocks for 2005+ Tacoma and there are various models with different weights etc... I think you get the point. One tune does not fit all.

Yes, we change the valving for every order. Whether its stock or racing.

 

Ah, ya, I had been neglecting the fact that the shocks are designed for wide variety of stock trucks. They aren’t a lot a different though are they?

Maybe a better question is, how much does intended use (e.g. daily driver vs desert beater) affect the optimal tune?

 

I’m asking an honest question. I feel like I over spent on my king shocks, but I’m also concerned/curious if I didn’t get the best out of them. I’m willing to take the experiment farther if there is enough evidence the effort will be rewarding.

 

Have you taken them offroad yet? Do you have adjusters?

I don’t know what that was about, but referring to my question above. Have you off-roaded your truck since you installed your shocks? It took me longer than I’d like to admit that “off road racing shocks” don’t feel great on road (imagine that! Not like it’s in the name or anything). Once you get out to where they were meant to perform. It’s night and day over stock or lower end shock options. Also do you have adjusters?

 

Yes, many times I have driven it fast on rough terrain since installing the shocks. I have taken my truck out on the trails maybe 10 times this year alone. I would go more often, but it's a 3 hour drive to get anywhere cool. For the most part I crawl slowly over rocks and stuff, but I do spend some time going fast. The truck is better handling off road with the kings, but it's not as night and day as I would like. It would however be nice to drive a stock truck over the same terrain to get a side-by-side comparison.

My shocks work fine on the road. I don't notice much difference at all compared to stock. If anything, the truck porpoises less when towing my boat.

I do not have adjusters.

 

Without driving your truck in person no one can make a diagnosis on what’s going on, but it sounds like you need to do a couple of things. Join a local group and do some runs with comparable rigs, get some experienced people in the group to drive your truck for a little bit, and same with theirs, see how their setup feels, just to rule out if these things are in your head or not. Then reach out directly to @AccuTune Offroad for options at your disposal. They’ve been nothing but helpful to me and many others on the forum here, more of a reason to purchase from a tuning company like them.

I'm not really trying to diagnose an issue with my truck per se. Rather, experiences with my truck lead me to be curious what intended use the factory King tune is optimized for and if that is even a valid question. In other words, is there such a thing as an off-road tune independent of an on-road tune?

Valving in the shocks (our tuning) will make a big improvement to ride quality. Our tunes are very different depending on how the truck is being used. Soft for street, firm for off-road. The variants in Tacoma trucks are very different. Weight, wheelbase, engine size all play a factor. At the end of the day, ride quality is subjective. However, I am confident our tuning will improve the ride quality on your shocks. Shoot us a DM if you are interested in sending them in.

 

Hey all, just got my @AccuTune Offroad 4A kit installed this past week. Paired with zero offset wheels and 295/70/17 Mickey Thompson Baja bosses. Got CMC done but definitely have some plastic I’ll need to address. The main concern is the fact that I rub on the resi hoses at full lock. I have truck shifting them up on the mount and even twisting them inward to no avail. Has any tan I got his? I will go grab photos now
