You should hear the cats going up 78,the bouncing and water bowls rattling theirs always at least one or two that will scream at every hard bump. The two on this last transport luckily got off at the first stop in Danbury CT. I was ready to scream with them!!

Good morning everyone!! We are loading up for a food giveaway tomorrow morning at our farmers market. The wind is whipping this morning and according to the weather the temperature is going to drop as the day goes on.

The people who try to explain say it has something to do with the topography and the freeze-thaw cycle ( which is starting now, on a day like today). You ride the interstates a good deal. I would think parts of WV, MD and NY are similar to much of PA. Are their roads better or the same?

They all have some bad but 78 is the worst it’s the most consistent. The passing lane is a little better and if I’m coming through at a time when I have it to myself for the most part I’ll ride in the left lane to preserve the peace. But the last trip I hit it about morning commute time.

Our roads in Michigan get torn up bad by the freezing/thawing. Everyone blames the gov , but really it’s ole mom nature. Further north like the UP it’s not as bad. It freezes in Oct. and thaws in June.

So it’s the freezing and thawing that’s the problem I was wondering because the roads further north don’t seem to be as bad. But 81 runs through the same state and it’s not nearly as bad.

    Good Morning :santa:

We haven't gotten as much snow a predicted. But wind and cold. Last evening took the backs roads home from work. The drive wasn't bad at all.

Current temp - 9 and wind chill is -43
I was out with the dog. If you stay out of the wind it's not to bad, if you keep moving.
Weatherman says we might see 6 degrees today.

    Be safe.

The US Geological Society has a map of the country showing the freeze/thaw cycle rate. The higher the rate, the worse the roads. I live in the highest rated area in Michigan. Being in the construction trade for years you learn tricks to deal with it, all cost money.

Yeah, was down to 17 last night here. Sucks as the pipes are a problem. Our water feed lines come in above ground with exposed pipes, then the pipes run through the attic. I was up every hour or two last night running water and was ready to shut the water off and drain the lines if needed. Luckily wasn’t needed. Insulated box around the feed line with a couple incandescent light bulbs FTW. We can take some cold as long as the power actually stays on.

Leaving a faucet trickling helps as well, keeps it flowing.:fingerscrossed:

Yeah,,, I’ve read some conflicting info on that. Leaving a faucet open lowers the pressure in the line and it will freeze faster, rather than leaving it closed and you get a few pounds of pressure in the lines. Only heard “old wive’s tales” on this and haven’t seen any actual data though.

People around here swear by it, but you’re right. Probably an old wives tale. It would be nice to know for sure.
