The color on these is so good. I came from CBIs and these are much easier on the eyes at night

 

Another day when hot pods save the day. Headlights were of no use at 4 AM. Weather's been silly here in WA.
(No I did not use the ditch lights, only the SS3 MAX fogs)

 

The freezing rain has been brutal. At least you could use the halogen high beam on the 4Runner hybrid OEM LEDs to thaw the headlight if there is no forward traffic.

 

Where are you located? We had an ice storm in the greater Seattle area, but it seems like the weather is pretty treacherous throughout much of northern US

Sorry, reread, you’re here! Did you try going out in it? We’ve relegated ourselves to stay home! We’re in the foothills, we still have 3 inches of snow all perfectly preserved in a layer of ice

 

And really at 0400 if there was no traffic you could jave been blasting the yellow ditch lights

 

That was the plan until I encountered a surprising amount of people on the road this morning.

 

Left for work from Mill Creek/Bothell to Everett. There were plenty of people struggling to go up the slightest incline while going straight.

I just shoveled the sidewalk and driveway. Took me at least an hour, maybe 90 minutes. And I’m beat. That’s some heavy stuff. All 3 trucks are frozen up tight. It’ll take a long time if I try to drive one. Wish I could park inside.

Interesting. The 2 stroke 3.0s pulled 1.6A and raised the 3rd Gen lamp lens temp by 4.5 degrees in 60 ambient. The XB v2.0 pulled 2.9A so it will have less than double the heat output to work with. Now the 2 stroke blew into the projector and not the lens, so it wasn’t optimized for lens heating. I also tried the 2 strokes in the fogs where heat is blown on the lens and the heat output was insufficient to noticeably warm the lens, though I didn’t record it with my FLIR. Compared to a true heated lens like JW speaker that runs at almost 110 degrees. Any heat directed at the lens is better than none of course. But plastic is also an insulator, and that design fills a void with warmer air which the plastic insulator lens will reduce heat transfer to the outer lens to melt snow. And also add having to overcome cooling airflow. The pod TIR filtration heating heats the plastic itself, not the space behind it, so the actual outer lens is heated. It’s exciting to see manufacturers of composite lamps looking to address this real world problem many of us face, but it doesn’t seem that this design is going to be warm enough for many if not most scenarios to clear snow/ice. I’d like to be wrong on that of course, looking forward to seeing how well it works. Maybe if an aux heater was added to the airflow for when temps fell below a certain level as a sort of heating boost. As someone who faces these conditions I enthusiastically support development into heated LED lamps.

 

Also kind lame if it’s always on, yeah? Don’t really want extra heat when you don’t need it.

 

It will have optimized recycle heat amount control system, several stage of freezer tests were run , in optimization phase. Can't deploy too much detail yet, but yes, evaluation had been in progress in wide range of freezing temp in freezer, making careful development.
Trigger condition also being configured, when needed, heating power redirection to be controlled, heat are already there. Hopefully to share more information soon, but very much working hard on this!!! Stay tuned.

 

In the case of using the heat sink output as lens heat, the heat is there regardless. It is just being redirected at the lens.

 

Anybody have any experience using ditchlights for on road use? I’m considering finally tackling my ‘turning light’ idea. The plan would be to use a pair of ditchlights - probably diode dynamic SSC2’s - and running them off a relay that’s activated by the turn signal when the headlights are on. I’m assuming the SAE driving combo would be the preferred focus.

This is to address my fading night vision…. Sometimes it’s damn hard to see the side roads for turning when there are no street lights.
