Damn Sam! It's :censored: cold out there...

After spending a highly motivated day of napping in the chair and having very odd dreams I noticed a package leaning against the mail box.

    Check temp o_O ... 4F ...

Using a snow shovel as a cane to offset the chance of breaking my neck on the rough sloped skating rink that is the driveway I ventured down & back. The world outside is coated in ice and the wind is still cranking.

The electric bill came too, I was pleasantly surprised to find it only $160 higher than normal, not bad for heating 100% with electric.

Back in the chair with a glass of locally made apple cider and the little grey cat sleeping in my shirt, she makes a good little hot water bottle this time of year.

I was admiring that little winch and wondering if it could be used to recover a stuck garden tractor. :anonymous:

Since just about every square foot I have up here is on some kind of slope getting stuck has been a frequent added benefit of ownership over the years. Usually it starts with the tractor following the grade no matter how you might steer and ends up sliding sideways or nose down over a bank against brush.

When i looked it up, as i recall they say it has a 1200lb straight pull capacity...not sure about that but i bet one could snatch back with a block.

How slow does it pull would be more the question. I have thought about putting an ATV winch on the tractor, I think I even have one around somewhere.
    Maybe next season. ;)

I dont know the actual ratio but its pretty slow.. when i plucked it from the dumpster the winch case was near full of water..took some r and r to get it running.. i need to finger out the carb on it..

I think an atv winch on the garden tractor would be useful..id go that route..however the capstan winch can be chained to whatever...some advantages there.

Fuck the ATV winch. A hand crank boat winch is $30 at HF or similar.

Needs no batteries and works just fine using them by hand.

Those hand cranks will cause shoulder damage with prolonged use, and lets be honest- they're just gonna corrode anyways. I am a winching expert, if you don't use warn winches, I dont even want to talk winching with you. By using a less efficient winch Ive seen people just get turned off and never drive a 4wd vehicle again.

I suppose.. as proof of the boat winch capacity, i have used one with a snatch block to pull logs up onto the mill. Was still a pia compared to pushing a button on a remote.
Ive also seen a gin pole with a boat winch hooked to a 3 pulley block(i forget the technical term) that was capable of hoisting some mighty big logs 25ft in the air.
