    I completely agree.

An electric winch is a game changer, no doubt.

But hopefully one does not stick their lawn mower in the ditch too often.

In most cases, it's only gonna take a small amount of cranking to free a 700# mower from the mud.i just don't see the point of having an electric winch dedicated to mower extrication.

The batteries on mowers are shit at best and the charging systems are only slightly better.

The winch is going to really tax that battery if you really have a long pull. Once the battery goes flat, and the rectifier can't keep up with the draw, the carb fuel shut off solinoid is going to spring closed. You just ran out of gas.

As seldom as I see this occuring, a boat winch still wins in my opinion. If you get stuck that often, you may need to rethink your mowing strategy.

Yes, I am aware gravity will throw things in an odd direction.

For that matter, electric winches are electric. The 1st component in any multi component system to fail will always be electrical.

I'm willing to be proved wrong. Hit me with your theories .

Frankly, I don't see why not using a Warn winch has anything to do with this conversation. The winch seldom goes bad. Most often it's something peripheral. Solenoids, fuses, direction controlling switches, remote switches, poor connection or shorted conductors.

The planetary gear assemblies are pretty durable no matter the brand .

I wasn't even aware there was a poll. I forgot to look at the thread title.

Regardless, the wife and I are enjoying our Xmas gifts in the south. We are done.

That's my roots. My grandmother was born in a snow bank near there...so I've been told over the years.

The mower isn't the one that gets stuck. (...well, most of the time...) :anonymous:

The old Ford I use for utility purposes does though, the lift frame for the push blade on these (all garden tractors really) hangs quite low and can get hung up fairly easily. There just isn't much ground clearance to work with.

Usually just a matter of a few feet to get back on good ground so no long pulls and dead batteries - gravity fuel system so no solenoid either.

The only way I would go ahead with the project is if I had the junk parts laying around - now that you bring it up I think I have a boat winch somewhere around too.

Thinking a bit further, some kind of pulling/lifting equipment mounted on the back of the tractor might come in handy for a lot of things around the estate. :welder:

One big advantage of the winch over the crank, often the tractor just needs a small assist to get moving. It is difficult to crank and drive at the same time. :mudding:

This is a bad low budget movie - that is pretty funny in a dark way, naturally one of my favorites.
