Doing this will cause the turn signal blinkers to hyper flash. It would also need a resistor on each side to prevent that. Kind of a PITA.
The updated OEM lights with glass lenses for the DTRL bulbs are the way to go.

edit: what is the part number for the updated smoked OEM lights? For 05-11?

they were around $315 a piece... hard to find. The dealerships i checked with that sell oem parts said "unavailable from Toyota" for the new part number. Problem is the say the new part numbers got replaced by the old part numbers...looks like they're getting rid of the old one's lol.

Cure was they made a change and replaced a lot of oem headlights for free. I just recently replaced my smoked oem 2010 Prerunner headlights again. Counting the originals, those were replaced under warranty prior to the NHTSA recall or whatever it was for melted lens. Then the second set was replaced shortly after they installed them since the dealer installed non smoked.
So my oem headlight shells get about 4 years of use before the clear lens begins to have issues. What I recently removed, likely many folks would glad install, gave them to my daughters husband to sell. I went aftermarket, so will see how that lasts.

You could be correct but unlikely they are selling the NHTSA recall headlights that melt. More likely since that style is older, maybe Toyota is not wanting to supply them any longer. Regardless you should dig deep on the latest part numbers so you do not buy old stock that melts.

Yeah... ordered the new versions and what i ended up getting was one old/one new... sent back. Looks like the L/H of the newer ones are pretty much gone. Most sites mention it got replaced by the older version. I ended up ordering the originals (pre tsb) and figured if i ever had to replace one in the future it would be easier to get a hold of.... plus they're about $100 less per side. With the amount of driving i do the melting lens won't be much of an issue... after 15 years the melting of the lens on my 2007 isn't that bad... just tired of the chrome. Also, being that i installed Xpel headlight protection back in 2007 the lens have hardly yellowed... plan on doing the same with the new smoked lights.

I'd suggest you keep the OEM headlights and do a black or color matching BHL mod. I did mine many years ago and love the look.

So it’s the tint that’s melting?

I changed out the flasher with one from Diode Dynamics. Disconnected the dtrl harness under the dash and added the OEM jumper. It was relatively easy to do. I couldn’t get the harness completely loose from the plastic block thing so I left the harness disconnected.

Then why would the TSB cover trucks from 2005-2011? They might have changed in 08 to where the dtrl isn't all the time but doesn't yours at least come on with your headlights?

If I recall correctly not all trucks came with dtrls. Nope the dtrl does not come on with head light. Only when using blinker.

If you order the old smoke part number now (81150-04173/81110-04173) the DTRL lens is clear... not sure if that corrected anything.
