Apparently it does (if the Toyota anti knock system is similar), as this video shows. The interesting part starts at 3:31. Increased octane led to a 4% increase in the test vehicle. I guess you learn something new everyday.
This is a pretty good article on how different engines react to different fuel octanes. I'd be really curious to see the actual difference with the 2.7.

Overall, the increased cost of premium here (cost is about an extra $1.50 gallon) doesn't even come close to offsetting what may be a marginal or even identical performance or mileage gains. But to each their own.

Good luck finding one, the 4 banger MT was only in the SR for 2016 and 2017.

I have a 2022 SR double cab 2.7 auto with 10000 miles and I love it. We drove from San Antonio to Colorado Springs at Thanksgiving We drove the speed limit when we got into the mountains outside of Texas the truck was mostly in 5th gear sometimes in 4th but it never slowed down. We averaged 21 mpg . I read about people not liking the seats but I loved the seating position. today we drove to Austin to look a a 4runner the speed limit is 70 I put the cruise at 70 and the adaptive cruise did its job. I bought this truck specifically to last a long time and after reading all I could I wanted the 2.7 for ease of maintenance and longevity. The truck does everything I need it to it will haul items from Home Depot and my Motorcycle when needed.

As the old adage goes, To Each Their Own! Have about 600 miles on my 23' SR 2.7l 4x2, I love this thing! Coming from a 19' WRX which was obviously 'faster' but actually had less tech than this little truck. If you want/'need' a vehicle to do a 0-60 in under 6 seconds why would you buy a truck? It's my daily in South Florida driving about 35 miles per day, I'm averaging around 24mpgs, cruise set at 67mph, if people are in a rush they can pass. I hit the ECT button merging on the 95 and I'm up to speed just fine. I wanted a reliable, cheap to operate/maintain vehicle that has plenty of aftermarket parts to make it my own. Long live the 4 banger!

Long live the 4 banger. I also love my 21 SR 2.7. Even if it’s buried under snow atm. These trucks suit a lot of ppls need. Slow and steady is my kinda style. It’ll take you any where and hual what you need. Best truck for a daily if you ask me.

It seems a lot of people want the Tacoma to be a sports car instead of a truck. I don’t get it. You know what you are buying but people constantly complain. The 2.7 is awesome.

Which oil filter and wrench are y’all using for a ‘16 4 banger?

I’ve owned a few Tacoma’s, some with the 4 & some with the 6, two & four wheel drives. The 2.7 will get you there all day long, my current 3.5 will do the same with a little more gusto.

If you don’t need (or want) the extra giddy up, the 2.7 is fine. Ho Ho Ho…

I am very curious as to why Toyota got rid of the 4cyl/5spd. Probably to simplify the assembly line. 16 and 17's will be worth holding onto. I never saw any in Canada as we get far fewer options for trucks, but some desirable different options.

If the 2.7 was available with a manual transmission, I might well have considered one; given the V6 is the only way to get a manual, the I4 (and lesser V6) models were nowhere to be seen on my short list of new vehicles.

Glad you are happy, phil McKraken.

I have the 2.7 coupled with the 5 speed manual transmission.

A few years old I presume; this year when I was shopping there was no such a critter available from the factory.

If someone really wants a manual then they need to spend more for a higher trim level with a v6, in a nutshell they did it to make more money

funny you say you loved the seating postion..its know that these tacomas have prob the worst seats in the market for comfort. i cant stand driving after 30-45 even with seat jackers.

I guess, but why sell it at all for MY 16 and 17? They developed a new transmission (R156F) and only used it for 2 years, seems like a lot of tooling and effort to then revert. I wonder if it no longer made sense for CAFE reasons
