Agreed, cutting stays. Always awesome seeing you and @koditten come up with stuff. Also want to watch @Kwikvette and his new purchase...

I won't be cutting anything for 2.5 months. On vacation in SC. It's nice down here!

I'm still drawing up things to cut with the cad program, though.

    Drew this up yesterday.

yeah, i thought it was a little gimmicky myself. but i just upgraded my welder, and sold off my old flux core to my brother in law. so it's at least an easy-ish project that gives him a solid chance to practice once he gets it all dialed in.

Can I get a screen shot of what you all are referring to? I can't bring up the original post.

    Thanks.

The outside welds I can agree can be difficult. The fillets should be less of a challenge. Both take some practice.

This is some sort of practice rig?

If yes, I give the owner credit on finding a cheap way to make money as well as help new people learn about welding.

    I think everyone wins.

I'm from the (just buy a welder and weld school). I'm not sold on welding training programs unless you want to do very specialized welding procedures.

Figure out how to make decent welds with this practice cube(?) And you should be able to go into any fab shop and do a weld test.

yes, it's just a sort of practice welding kit. i don't fault the guy for selling them, i'm happy he posted the idea and i can use up some metal scrap that's just taking up space..

his youtube is a lot more of the style of informative on the back-end side of running a fab shop, so it's not much of a stretch of him setting up test projects to improve one's skills.
    https://www.youtube.com/@TheFabricatorSeries

in terms of a welding training program, i've looked a number of times, there's really not any sort of welding training that's less than a full-time 1 yr program with prerequisites around me. that's really the worst part. either it's hardcore all-in, or no-core. i've got a job, i just want to tinker with a welder from time to time.

eastwood used to have some 1-day-on-saturday monthly training sessions, with a welding beginner/average/expert level class about once a quarter, but those all went away during covid. there's talk of starting them back up, but not much progress as of yet. i mostly wanted to go to a class just to get some guidance on setting all the gear up and to get that 'inner circle knowledge' in terms of what to look for, and what setting to adjust how.

but lacking that, and me being the stubborn guy i am, i'm teaching myself. sometimes there's no better experience than moving fast and breaking stuff.

Just find a local; I've been showing 2 different people how to weld at my place.

Thought about offering it to a few more; hell one of them even put cash in a jar as a 'metal fund' in case I want to keep doing it for others.

So true. And... it's amazing how a local expert can be so helpful. I can spend an hour trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong and I talk to him for 5 minutes and all good. LOL!

Just out of curiosity, what is the purpose of this hole?

*edit: I'm assuming this is to attach the laminate table top maybe?

If you look at the "assembly" you'll notice the holes are on top as that's where the angle iron is welded between the legs.

My buddy bought these sort of "countertops" since this L-shaped shelf will go in his office.

I pre-drilled holes, evenly spaced, so he can mount said top to the frame.

He uses the same countertop piece (a 4' wide run, only 12" deep) held up with L-shaped brackets mounted to studs against the wall. It's helped up fine as he's had his office for over 10 years.

This frame will be a thousand times stronger, and will be in a room dedicated to showcasing computer builds he does. He's got a Youtube channel for his company and does probably the cleanest custom liquid cooled setups I've ever seen.

Not welding related but, I went to buy some new angle iron, new 1.5" x 1.5" x 20' (only $30).

One guy that works the register always gets me a discount; the guy that gets my order ready hooks me up when I buy remnants.

He gave me 20' of square tubing, FREE. Talk about a freaking hook up!

Sad but true it really comes down to who you know.

I hope you tip well or bring Donuts it really helps.

I would love to hear the rest of story on the square tube I have received a few goodies over the years.

Some places it can be a Royal pain to correct inventory . If it is not in the system it can not be sold!

    @koditten

Another Fusion 360 tip for that problem of finding gaps in your closed loop lines. I know you said that other method was a gamechanger, so thought you'd like the one I realized the other day. Basically, if you select a portion of a line, then hold the control key and double click on that same segment, it "selects" all the other attached lines. So it stops at the first gap it encounters.

See the area near the bottom is supposed to be a closed loop, but isn't.

    F360-1.jpg

If I click anywhere on the line ONCE, then hold down Ctrl key and double click, it "finds" the gap and stops there.

Made this front plate for a friend. He is restoring a 1967 Ford Fairlane and this is the front fender emblem
