I had to buy my own car(s), though mom and dad provided wheels for my sisters. There was a lesson in there, somewhere, I suppose. I went the other way with my children. They were given respectable, reliable vehicles (mostly to reduce mom's worrying) contingent on maintaining good grades, behavior and working part time.

When I turned 16 I found a blown out '77 Camaro the guy wanted gone for $500. Had some rust repair done and paint thrown on it (the body shop guy took pity on me and did a far better job than what I was charged for!). Previous owner had put a Muncie rock crusher in it, topped with one of those retro Hurst shifters, and a 4.11 posi rear end. I did a *lot* of wrench turning on that small block to get it running right. Magically transformed the rear tires in to drag slicks in about three months; averaged 3 MPG in town (the way I drove then). Then it got hit by a city snow plow. They wrote me a check for repairs, I sold the car for more than I had in it and bought an '80 Ford Fiesta. Nowhere near the power of the Camaro, but it sure was a fun little car to toss around and, brother let me tell you, I could afford things other than gas (like Altes, Goebbels or PBR!) on the weekend! There was a lesson in there, somewhere, too, I suppose. ;)

WTF?! Sorry you have to deal with so many jealous poors, @Curly_ … I was taught that if you work hard, you can have nice things. My parents worked hard & gave me nice things. Now, I work hard & have even nicer things… Congrats to you & your son! Enjoy the fuck out of the nice things that you can do for him! Merry Christmas.

    Well…we’re proud of you too.

PS, I would not post about buying my child an expensive toy or vehicle, but that’s just me. Lots of peeps here have worked long and hard to afford a Tacoma for themselves and it’s hard to fathom a teenager being giving one as a present.

PSS, one of my cousins received a Rolls for her first car, it was used, but like new. She refused to drive it, lol. Daddy took it back and picked a new 280ZX 2+2 turbo, yes…that was few years back : )

I think you missed the whole point. It’s the fact he’s posting for validation. Not the fact he gave his kid a truck.

Maybe, just maybe, he’s posting because he’s proud. I seriously doubt that he needs you or anyone else’s validation. But if, by chance, he did, so the fuck what. It’s so pathetic the way some of your brains work.

Welp, here we go. For my 16th birthday, I was gifted a 2021 Tacoma TRD Sport right off of the lot. I am forever grateful, and always go out of my way to be as helpful as possible. I have a 4.3 GPA as of right now, and I work 30 hours a week, while still in high school. They want the best for me and make sure that I work hard. The only reason they gifted me this amazing thing is because they want me to be safe. Safety is their #1 concern. I'm probably going to get so much hate for this message, but I never thrash on it, change the oil myself every 5k miles, and check every fluid (besides diff and transmission of course) every other week. I am beyond astonished at this amazing gift, and I know that they have worked so so hard to earn the money for it. I hope that maybe my situation might help putting this post into perspective for others. Awesome, OP, and I hope your son enjoys every mile he gets out of it. It'll last him a while with proper maintenance!

Save the pats on the back and virtue signaling for FB or IG. Nothing of substance will come from this thread. Just let it die the good death it deserves. All I'm hearing is:

when i was 16 i took my POS chevy (that cost 2,500) around to dead end streets in rural areas and tried to see how long i could make tire marks on the asphalt. It was a hell of a fun time and i didnt have to worry about key marks since it came with 3-4 keyed striped down the side. Its liberating having a beater.

Haha, I am talking with a seller on Facebook Marketplace about a NA first gen Miata. He's asking $1750 but it needs a trans rebuild. I have dropped the trans on my friend's FRS with him, so I am seriously considering it!

Edit: It comes with the replacement trans, he says he just doesn't have enough time to swap it.

I once gave a homeless dude $1 at a stop sign while in my Tacoma. Can you like this post so the world knows I did this back in May 2005. Thanks in advance.

The “car is safe” excuse can be said for older cars too. You don’t need Toyota Safety Sense & Android Auto to be safe. You need to be an attentive driver.

I was driving since I was 12 and that means nothing on public roads and I drove pos (like had to keep the heater on full blast to keep it from over heating in east texas full on summer in 50% humidity) and mostly rode the bus, that's humbling for a senior I'll tell you that, and my parents or their gen never dealt with entitled kids like parents now days do...gee wonder why

best advice is to put your young kids in a tank because they WILL wreck it, you shouldn't deny statistics

yeah welcome to the forum...or should we be welcoming your kid XD
