No. If the Rivians were 2WD you’d have a point. Anyone who wants to off-road a Rivian simply buys the spare tire with the truck. It’s a factory available option, not like there is no spare and no way to carry one. You’re acting like there isn’t a spare when there most definitely is.

Hennessy VelociRaptorR 1000, is rated at almost 1000HP and is equipped with a spare.

I don't think that segment of truck is all that practical. I'd spend my money on something like that before an EV truck in the same price range.

I don't how many people buy those custom six wheel trucks, but they don't look good to me.

The no spare tire really annoys me on a vehicle marketed as on off-roader. I remember my second XJ Cherokee came with a tiny donut for a spare. It’s so lame and such nickel and diming by the manufacturer.

How many people that have a spare tire actually know if they have air in them or not? I never check mine but then again, I’m a crazy mo’fucka that likes to live on the edge. o_O

With the amount of accessories Rivian has offered. Why didn't they offer an optional swing out tire carrier with a spare?

Because that’s a great way to ruin efficiency, something that matters to EVs a lot more than ICE vehicles.

Warm (50°) weather and 2wd Conserve mode can be pretty efficient.

    Don't care about efficiency!!

It would be an optional accessory. Adding AT tires take a hit on efficiency. Did you forget about the Optima SEMA build that drags an OR trailer around?

Rivian could have also build a regular cab truck, or a compact truck. That would be more efficient than the current R1S.

I don't think efficiency has anything to do with it. With the amount of other optional accessories an exterior mount tire carrier option probably would have sold.

Efficiency has everything to do with almost every design choice in the trucks. You might not care but Rivian and EV buyers do. For those that want a swingout there are several hitch mount swing outs available.

Why would you even need a spare tire carrier? The R1T's full-size spare fits in an enclosed space under the bed.

edit: Unless I'm misremembering and it's the Maverick's spare that's set up in that way.

It’s in a compartment under the bed. Downside is you’d have to empty most of the bed to get to it but it is kept out of the way nicely until you need it.

It's an accessory like the tent Rivian sells the tent does not increase efficiency, and is an after thought if the design process. Rivian could have marketed their own hitch mount, people obviously want them on their R1T&S's.

Rivian markets itself as an adventure vehicle. Jeep Wrangler in 4xe, LR Defender, and Ford Bronco all have external mounted tire carriers. Those are Adventure Vehicles.

R1T has an internal spare storage compartment that is fine, but if you have purchasr a $4k spare wheel and tire as an option. There should also be an option for a tire carrier. Who wants to unpack the contents of their bed just to change a flat.

I don't think Rivian expects their customers to take their trucks down the trail, and that's ok.

If tire carrier and even the spare is this controversial. Maybe Rivian planned on discontinuing the spare long before they ever took anyone's deposit?

The spare is $800, not $4000.
