This. Get a Sienna you and wife will appreciate getting kids in and out of a lower height big sliding doors and have plenty of interior space for the crap you will be toting everywhere. We use the minivan for nearly all trips and our kids are 10 & 11 at this point (bought that new in 15). I DD the Tacoma and use it for shorter trips, but it’s just too small for a family of four, plus dogs.

Choosing a tacoma trim is a pretty easy decision. If you never plan any serious off roading the sr, or sr5 is fine with the sr5 being more civilized, otherwise a trd is a better choice.

Started shopping back in September or October and went with them specifically because they do not charge adjustments on new vehicles, and could get the exact truck I wanted quicker than anyone else I found.

OP, it sounds like a TRD Off Road Premium with Advanced Tech Package is what you want. Like you, the Tacoma is the right size truck for me. Yes, there are times I'd like to have larger bed or a little more room but 95% of the time I prefer a smaller truck that's easier to get around in, gets better mileage and will take up less room in my garage. I have way more reasons to purchase a Tacoma over a larger truck. I put money down on a MGM (or CSM) TRD Off Road Premium w/Advanced Tech Package and LED headlights back in July and expecting it in any day now. I test drove several used lightly used Tacoma's and I suggest you do the same because some folks can't stand the way the 3rd Gen trans shifts (I didn't notice anything weird about it during my test drives). Also, there's plenty of dealers that are not charging surcharges. Good luck and be patient.... I've been waiting just over 5 months for my specific truck.

I align with a lot of what you said. I had never sat in, driven, or owned a Toyota Tacoma, coming from 80s VW and Audi mainly with a few odd GMC/Chevy diesel 3/4 ton trucks, and my wife's '00 TJ Wrangler.
When I was researching what I wanted to have for a 2017 Tacoma in February 2017, my choices came down to DCLB as #1, TRDOR being #2, and silver sky metallic as #3. I knew I was going to upgrade the truck over the life of it and saw the OR features being a great start with the locker, CC (works awesome), moonroof, etc. I did "want" the JBL system and found out that the build was almost never made. The dealer I was working with knew of the truck I wanted sitting at another dealer and pulled it over for me after trying to "sell me" white (TJ is), black (GMC is), blazing blue (supermodel colour I love to look at but it's not "me") and MGM (many friends have it). On March 13th I picked the truck up with 11 miles!
I am super happy with my purchase and If I was to do it again, I would get the exact same build. I cannot leave well enough alone and in the past always upgraded my vehicles to my needs, wants, and desires.
The amount of real true hands-on knowledge here on these forums is amazing with proven upgrades like OEM LED headlights, suspension, sound system, wheels, exhaust, etc. Get the truck that has all the features you want and go have fun!

I have to put my 2 cents in here... I have the Taco OR premium and carry my 3 and 6 year old around sometimes.

    1) the leather is crap, I wouldn't recommend it EVER. This is coming from a guy that has owned it for less than 2 years, and cleaned/conditioned it for 6+ times

    2) the premium with the 360 cameras are pretty crappy. Not worth the money. Reminds me of a vehicle that came out 15 years ago.

    3) A lot of people are saying go with a 4 runner or Sienna, and I would agree. The Taco seems wider then my wife's Rav4 but leg room is lacking.

Edit: I upgraded my lights to LEDs for my stock non pro headlights and could not be happier! I live in the country where there are zero street lights.

I'm gonna toss the kids in the truck in a bit and I'll take pictures to give you an idea (I'm 5'10" to give you an idea where my seat is)

My only advice is to get the taco after the kids are out of the rear facing seats and onto forward facing seats and/or boosters.

If not, it will be super tight. I used my taco as a family hauler when my first born was 3 and still in a rear facing seat. I had to position it behind my wife and it made for a pretty tight fight. Now that my kids 5 and 9 are in regular front boosters, I bought another tacoma and it's been working great.

Get an OR DCLB with the Off-Road package, Tech package, LED headlights. Get aftermarket Katzkin leather seats installed.
