Low Oil Pressure... Engine replacement?

Yea, no kidding … what was wrong with the fuel lines ?! And ps?!

 

PS just completely drained one day. I forgot what happened but they fixed it.

Fuel lines were damaged by a dealer that did a repair for my truck. Long story short a gas station had diesel pumped in to the gas tanks and i got a belly full of diesel lol. The dealer I go to for my free service at 10k miles noticed it and fixed it under warranty.

Come again? The dealership put diesel into your truck at one point?

 

Sorry if it came out confusing. I was traveling for work. Stopped at a random gas station to get gas and the station had pumped diesel into it's gas tanks. So when i stopped to fill up diesel was coming out of the gas pumps. I killed on the interstate and had it towed to the nearest dealer. They did the repair job but damaged the fuel lines in the process.

Good thing I work for a business that has hotels so I was able to stay comped for the weekend while the work was getting done.

Just one of the many bad luck situations I experience regularly.

 

Not sure how large chunks of metal get into the oil filter, regardless have them drop the oil pan and check for metals. And stand beside them when they do it. If there's nothing but oil in there, refill w/ oil, new filter, have them start/drive it and see...

 

Man that stinks. How long ago did the diesel in the gas happen?

 

Yup bad news. Needs a motor replacement. They said it would cost $16k to replace with a used motor with 80k miles on it. I don't think I'd replace it with a used motor at that price.

The Manager said I can try to call Toyota care to see if they would still cover it after the warranty period considering it was days out of coverage. I asked if that's ever worked. He said twice in his 26 years. I guess I'll try and all they can say is no.

The manager then said to try Toyota corporate and see if they will do anything. He said he's seen where they offer to cover a portion of the repairs in some cases.

They don't really know what's wrong and would cost $3,400 to tear it down to find the problem but at that point it would just need a new motor anyway.

The manager said it's possible the oil pump went out but no way to tell unless they tear it down.

I guess I'll make some calls and hope for the best.

It was hard to get good pictures but you can see the metal in there. The "large" pieces I'd imagine was just the service advise trying to relay what he was told.

 

$16k for a used engine replacement is outrageous. That dealer is raping you.

Get the truck towed to a reputable independent shop that will put a used motor in it for you. If you don't know of a reputable shop, then have it towed to your house while you find one.

My guess is that when the timing cover leak was fixed, they used too much sealant and it eventually ended up plugging up the oiling system.

 

Yeah, going to talk with a shop my dad deals with tomorrow to get some prices.

Dealer quote was $10,050 on the motor and the rest was labor and misc. cost.

The manager said they can take it down and if it was a issue related to the timing cover repair that they would cover the cost but I would have to come out of pocket the $3400 if it was not related.

 

On Usedcarparts.com l was seeing used engines in the 4k to 6k range.

 

Engine replacement hours is probably about 35-40 hrs in the book +\-. So depending on labor rate 3500-5k on the labor. But there are plenty of low mileage engine assemblies out there for 4-6k. 10-12k would be pretty spot on. Still cheaper than a new truck. Although in those pics I done see anything that looks like large metal pieces. What are they saying is wrong, spun rod, bad main bearings, does it need new heads, did they even pull the oil pan? You can spin a rod and just need bearings or just need rod bearings and crankshaft. Based on the pics how did they get to an entire engine?

 

What a shit show. You may want to see what they offer you on trade … and if it’s less than 10k under what you think it’s worth. I’d punt it …

also let us know what Toyota says since you just had a warranty. It’s fairly weird to have a catastrophic engine failure like that …

 

10,500 for a used engine with 80K on it is re-fucking-diculous. I'd see if I could find a used engine myself and find a independent mechanic to install it. 35 - 40 hours labor to replace it is also ridiculous. A decent mechanic should be able to do that job in 16 hours (2 days)

 

4 days, ugh WTF.

I'm in the used engine elsewhere camp if you're on your own for it

 

i really hope this works out for you and as others asked, please keep us posted.

i see some silvery specs in the filter photos but i'm not entirely sure what i am looking at. if it were me, i'd want more of a dignostic. they should be able to test the oil pump.

i'd drop the oil pan and unless there were chunks of metal and the if oil pump checked out oK, i'd put in new oil and filter, start/drive it, and see what happens.

 

So sorry (and disappointed) this happened to you.

Did the dealer do all the oil changes or do you have documentation they were done by an independent shop?

If I'm reading this right you are the original owner and purchased the warranty from the dealer at time of purchase. I completely understand from an obligation stand point 6 years is 6 years and not a day longer.

However from the customer stand point you did everything recommended and had a failure 4 days out. Polite but relentless effort with Toyota might work or might not but that is what I would put my effort into.

If that doesn't work I found many low mile engines listed for less than $10K with just a brief search.
If you go with an independent shop they may not offer any warranty unless they source the engine.

I would just trade it...between filling it with diesel, and timing cover leaks...I wouldn't put another dime into that one.

 

That's about what an independent shop would charge (labor only) to install a replacement engine. That's why I say get that thing towed out of there immediately before they rip you off any further. Tell them not to touch it you are coming to get it.

The independent shop can pull the pan (like others suggested) and might find something simple like debris clogging the pickup (probably from the timing cover fix). Since you shut it down right after the light came on it might not need an engine replacement.

The independent shop can document everything they find. You can still go back on the dealer and try to get some money out of them. Especially if the evidence shows they were negligent.

 

I agree it can be done in a day or two by a good mechanic. But that’s not how not a works, most is not all shops use book time and don’t bill at straight time.
