Hey guys I was wondering how much oil would come out if I take the filter off my truck and let it drain. I put a little too much oil in my truck and want to let some out. Thanks

Roughly how much is a little to much?
I would guess the filter has around 1/4 quart of oil in it.

Up to half a quart over is no biggie. I would also guesstimate a quarter quart in the oem filter, if the anti drain valve is doing its job on inverted set-ups.

You can run a hand pump siphon down the dipstick tube and pull out oil that way. Clean and simple and you can measure what’s coming out as you go so you know when to stop.

I put a empty coolant bottle at the bottom where the drain is to catch the oil, also the bottle has measurements on it. Just trying to get it done tonight, no hand pump atm.

question is how much did u add over?

start the truck. turn it off. then check the dipstick. wipe then check again. if its right at the line your fine. if its ever so slightly over your still fine.

but if you really neeeeeeeddd to remove just a little. start truck. turn off. remove filter. let it drain. put filter back in. start truck. turn off truck. pull filter again. do it till your satisfied

I used 6, when I checked the dipstick after the oil change I was at the halfway line so I added a half quart more but after adding the half I was almost a inch above the full mark.

It would take a bunch of oil filter drains and starts. You can do it if you have time.

the worst part is, reading the dip stick after checking numerous times makes it harder to get accurate

Yeah I did it at night with little light, I have bad eyes, I might of read the dipstick wrong after I added the 5.5 quart of oil, stupid mistake. Took me 4 times of taking the filter off to get me right at the full line.

This is where the Fumoto valve comes in handy.

I came thinking this was Season 2 of the "wrong oil in engine" thread.

    Not entirely disappointed

The dipstick design pretty much sucks. Leave it sitting overnight, check it in the morning before starting it, betcha it reads low now.

I would not waste my time over a 1/2 quart of oil. I probably wouldn’t even worry if it was 1 quart over.

Uhhh, it not unheard of to see these engines being run with 11 quarts in them. :anonymous:

I ain’t sweating a half quart of oil.
Hell, we can dump what you take out into my engine? You know, freshen up my oil:thumbsup:

Honestly I have no idea what a qt is. Less than a liter I think?

overfilling tends to cause more pcv issues. Plus in my world they expect perfection lol

I don’t know, but I do know there 3.8L in a US gallon.
And 4 quarts in a gallon.
So a quart is like .85L? (Rough estimate)
