All depends on your budget. Taco's have a reputation for running strong for a long time so buying a used truck shouldn't be a problem if everything checks out with it.

I think there is a huge thread on here debating this very topic.
If you are already open to buying used then save you some coin & pick one up. Lots of good low mileage tacomas out there. :)

If I had a chance to do it over again I would have picked the Nissan Fronteer over the Toyota Tacoma.
As a new Tacoma Owner I am getting very depressed reading about the low build quality problems with the 2nd Gen models, from rear bumpers rusting to loose windshields, blower motor problems and such!

Just honest about the way I feel, I don't hide my true feelings

Well, I think I look like a bit of an idiot, I usually shop well.

This time I bought the more expensive truck with less capability for more money.

I'm not trying to stir things up. Just, if you shop side by side, based on objective merit, you have to buy the frontier.

I have the one redemption. In hawaii the nissan dealer marks up the cars, the toyota dealer doesnt, the toyota dealer is awesome, nissan probably isn't.

island, do you know off hand if those ratings are true for all 2nd gen tacomas? I guess I'm kinda surprised how the tacoma stacks up. I know I looked at edmunds and such about quality compared to other midsize pickups when I bought my 05 and I thought the tacoma was rated very highly.

that was first year. no data. you cant know exactly why they rate it like that. ive had heartburn over some ratings i considered false in the past. but you got to use something other than gradpa's opinion right? use the data out there and don't fish for ones you agree with.

they're also relative ratings... so your model can change its rating by staying the same.

To clarify, I looked at edmunds to see ratings of later years which convinced me about buying my 05. I understand what you're saying.

Have you checked a Frontier forum? At first glance, I see at least as many, if not more threads about problems.

Got to take that stuff in context. I got all paranoid for a while after joining here. And then I realized: I'm not one of the unlucky ones - my rig drives like butter! (so far...)
