Yea you got it right… now it may not be relevant to the failure at hand ?! As it happened like 80k miles ago… but maybe the fuel pump failed ? No idea what’s going on. But something is still not adding up with that dealer. Who went out of their way to contact a gas station?! File an insurance claim with that gas station and do it all for the customer no questions asked ?

it’s like someone runs over a deer and the dealer claims the car was fixed under warranty because Santa forgot to lock up Rudolph

The OP stated this happened at a high volume filling station, I'm betting dozens of people contacted them within an hour.

Lot of bouncing around and replying to different post so.

    1. Diesel wasnt a warranty item. It was just a separate event at around 10-15k miles when I was saying all the things that's happen to this truck. It was 80k miles ago so probably not relative to the current issue. The gas station covered the repair.
    2. It had a lot of metal flakes... just couldn't get a good picture.
    3. It didn't have any noises, might not have been from me.
    4. Warranty was 6 years 100k miles, i was 4 days out of warranty but still under 100k with 94k miles.
    5. Head gasket wasnt me.
    6. It was diagnosed with some type of internal engine failure due to the metal in the oil filter. Likely an oil pump failure but they would have to do a tear down for $3,400 to pinpoint the issue and with metal in the oil and being out of warranty doesn't make sense to do it IMO.

Side note i called Toyota corporate and they said they will look into the issue for me and let me know if there are any solutions in 2-3 days. I'll wait on Toyota corporate and see if anything comes from it but other wise ill tow to a shop, have them look at it and go from there.

    This guy gets it

I believe they said it would be wholesaled, which isn't surprising since they mostly sell Toyota only.

Oddly the GM dealer who first diagnosed the failure (of course didn't know about any warranty, ho ho ho) said "maybe we can turn the CEL off and you can trade it in somewhere else, just don't mention it"

Yup. After I found the secret warranty online and gave him the document # it was a "oh hey didn't know about that before!" moment. The same dealer a few weeks later (sans the first rep who had left) refused to do the job despite having received approval from GM unless I paid cash in full first.

Second dealer took and did it but charged me for a new timing chain and camshaft when I went to get the truck, stating it wasn't included in the secret warranty. I reminded them it was also under the original powertrain and was told take it up with GM, pay me or I can't give you back the truck.

Corporate office tells me the dealer could have included it but they aren't able to. Supposedly the powertrain warranty didn't come into play, not sure how.

It was like hearing the cookie jar break in the kitchen, walking into the room and finding the jar with my niece and nephews. Nobody knows shit but that they didn't do it.

I believe if you read people's post, they are talking about taking it to another dealer.

2017 Tacoma OffRoad, 73,500 miles. Christmas night I was over at my daughters home 3 miles away, bad snow. Had it in 4Hi and all of a sudden stalled with High Transmission Temperature. Died. Restarted and drove home. Started up today to go to dealership to have them check it out. Sounded like bad lifter noise when I started it up and drove. After two hours got this video while I was waiting https://api.mykaarma.com/video-walk...57fdf193dd4afc51e40a&fileType=image_and_video
Quoted me $13,500 for used engine replacement.
    Oil changes every 5,000 miles
    Frustrating

I'm starting to see a not so good trend as these engines age...

Few and far between, but still something that raises an eye brow.

I wouldn’t use a truck forum as your data source, only because virtually no one is coming on a truck forum to report how reliable their engine is. The inherent bias is enormous, no one’s fault.

That's why I said few and far between.

By the time my truck gets the higher miles it'll probably be rotted out underneath anyways needing to be replaced anyways.

Truck frame and components are coated with cosmoline and I pressure wash everything after every storm. But even with that, the new liquid salt shit they're using just eats everything.

I can’t fully empathize because I no longer live in the north, haven’t for years, but lots of worthwhile mitigation out there for the frame issues.
