Damage? Highway in 4H

Let my friend borrow my truck -oops. He drove 40 miles on the highway at around 65…..in 4H. Any damage or issues I should be worried about? Should I change the dif oil, or just forget it?

 

Probably good for it. If it were in 4 low… maybe not so much. You can’t go wrong changing the oil

 

It’s fine, the highway doesn’t have turns tight enough to cause any problems. I drove mine for months at a time every winter in Fairbanks without ever leaving 4HI.

 

Your truck is fine,,, your friend is not.
Loaning/borrowing a vehicle is one of those things I try to avoid.

 

I've done it intentionally in the rain. I certainly would not worry about it and contrary to what I've read I do not see a noticeable difference in gas mileage.

I'd be very concerned if you said he did 40 miles in dry road stop-and-go and turning every couple of blocks city driving and traffic.

 

Nothing to worry about. Toyotas are tough. I’ve never replaced anything related to 4hi .

 

Anyone who has ever owned a 4X4 has done something similar. I wouldn't do it intentionally, even in the rain, but as long as no sharp turns were made on a dry hard surface there shouldn't be any catastrophic damage. But every time you do something like this you are causing excessive wear on the 4X4 drivetrain. If done enough, you will see premature parts failure. If you're the type who trades every few years, it will probably be the next guy who pays for the operator error.

 

I had no idea about the potential issue. Took one for a test drive and slipped it into 4H in a parking lot... tight turned, figure eights, parallel parked, more tight turns LOL...

Sales dude had zero clue about it. Tried to get it into 2L but couldn't figure out how -

 

"What do you need moved? I'll drive, let me help." -For best friends and grandparents.

"UHaul is two blocks that way, good luck." - For acquaintances and siblings.

"Sure, here are the keys." - For when after I'm dead.

 

Yeah, never let people borrow your vehicle unless immediate family that are on your insurance.

This stuff happens, but also people have to realize that if they get into an accident in your vehicle, you are responsible, not them. If you think saying “no” may ruin a friendship, think about the strain on your relationship if they caused an accident or killed someone with your vehicle.

How are so many people on here lately, driving around in 4h and don't notice that the truck handles differently???

 

Have you been on the road lately? Most people do everything but drive,,,, when they drive.

 

Texting 90 words a minute. People are so self-absorbed they have to pick up the damn phone and text every stop light.

 

Zero worries. Now if you drove 10,000mi then you might start to see some issues. new tires at a minimum.

Absolutely nothing wrong with speed in 4hi. My truck hasn’t been in 2 since November. Highway, city, as long as the wheels can slip when the drivetrain binds it doesn’t matter. If you don’t have snow/ice, getting to and from the highway might not have been the greatest on things but nothing you can do about it now.

If you are ignorant (“I had no idea”) don’t do stupid things. Sounds like an a$$hole move on your part. Why would you intentionally cause potential damage to a vehicle you don’t own?

Nothing happened. The limits are for shifting into and out of 4H. Once you’re in, speed doesn’t matter. I have a buddy who races baja in stock Toyotas. Tight turns and forcing a mechanical transfer case at high speeds might mess something up, but I always put it in 4H when it’s raining for a few miles to make sure everything is getting used and lubricated.

 

I had no idea there was a potential problem - the sales dude should have known. I didn't know until I bought one and read up on it in the manual and on this site. It was not an intentional 'thing' by me.
