Sorry, my story sounds like two different trips!

So the way this place works is -

You can browse the remnants outside, and one of the guys driving a forklift gathers whatever you want, weighs it, and meets you at the office for you to pay.

Or, you go directly to the office to request new steel, pay, and one of the forklift dudes gathers your order for you.

Went to get new steel, and when I stepped out I told the guy getting my order I was going to look for 1.5" remnants as I only need 2' of it.

That's when he got my angle order ready, but also brought 20' of square tube too.

I definitely gotta get these guys something for always taking care of me.

 

I read it to be the same trip . Like you would just take a random trip and be given a length of of square tube

my supplier the tube came in 24' lengths . There was a reason the supplier could not sell that piece.

Yeah, new steel only comes in 20' long sections here as well, except I think they have certain sizes in 24' as well.

With the rear seats up, I comfortably fit 6' long pieces. I bet I can fit longer if I lay it on top of my folded down seats but don't want to risk tearing the leather. I just replaced the leather in the rear seats back in February or March.



But yeah, great past few days!

Tube comes in 20' lengths.

Angle can be 24' lengths.

Just depends on the supplier to that steel distributer.

But, yes, Remnants can be a great money saver. Those pieces of iron have already been paid for by some other customer. That supplier is going to take that iron to the scrap yard for 80$/ton or similar or sell them to you at the new iron price per pound.

If they like you, they will sell it to you at the scrap iron price.

In short, don't be afraid to pick up a box of donuts on your next trip to grab random metal purchases .

 

Was thinking something even better than that but yeah I'll do that to start.

Angle might've been what I bought at 24' at a different time.

As for the remnants, sometimes I'll get a "lighter" weight written on my ticket.

For instance, the 85lb 1/4" steel plate? He put 40lb on the ticket, and I was charged $1/lb versus their normal $1.40/lb rate.

 

My guys seem to run on purified sugar.

There is always some sort of sweet treet on their counter that can be seen from the front desk.

I don't think I've ever seen a salad being eaten.

 

You only eat salad where the boss can see your sticking to your healthy diet.

Just need to make those 2 more tabs, and weld them onto the angle iron that's sitting on top of the assembly.

That will tie in the rear, right section.

Once we take it to the shop, we can figure out what to do for the corner section that has nothing on top.

Countertop is sitting on top for mock-up purposes.

It needs the left end chopped of its excess, and end caps installed.

After that, screws from underneath to attach the countertop to the angle iron, then bolts torqued down.

 

Torqued? Or tightened? Either way, nice work. You can come outfit my shop anytime....

He's super stoked about the setup, as am I; kept saying "fuck I need to build me one of these" but of course, I wouldn't put this much effort for myself so I'll keep using my Harbor Freight table with a steel plate tacked on

 

Agreed. I bought my garage with wood shelves already installed. Steel is probably overkill for the next shop (coming in the next few months), but it's the only medium I know. I feel much more comfortable working with metal than I do with wood. I'll probably do a hybrid like you did with the main frame work being metal and the shelving being some sort of plywood. Will likely do an adjustable system with various/multiple tabs and angle like you did for the most versatility. Nice work and great inspiration though...

 

Yeah, I'm not used to working on a wood top either.

My small bench that my drill press is mounted on is scratched and has some deep gouging -





It's ok though. I just use it to sit and sketch something or chill when I'm taking a break.

Once it gets damaged to a point where it warrants being replaced, I'll go metal top.

I think you should start that plasma table thread. I answered my last " what welder would you suggest" question. Time fir others to offer their opinions.

my paid version ran out today. Called Autodesk (fusion360 parent company ) and told them I was not resubscribing and wanted to use the hobbyist version. They gave me no hassle at all.

Playing with the free version I have found nothing different. I'm still Learning so I'm very happy.

 

Thanks for sharing the tip on the free hobby version of F360 -- I dove in and am definitely fumbling through. I've found the Lars Christensen YT videos very helpful. Anyways -- I'm going to build a rear bumper for the tacoma and the 40 and figure I'd mock them up here as a good way to learn. I love the ability to create flanges as a way to quickly get the shapes. But as far as I can tell this is all bending the metal. I'd love those edges to show as open corner joints where I can see where I'd weld vs bend. The 2nd pic shows my attempt at a corner.



Below I am creating a cover over that square but instead of using the flange I created a new sketch with extrude ... to get the corner joint ... but this seemed to take a lot more clicks and I think will be much tougher as I introduce angles.



I guess my question -- can I create a flange that doesn't bend but creates a joint like the pic in the bottom?

 

I'm not following, but I'm new AF as well to using f360.
