Good point. I believe they did pay for the technology.

I was reacting to some claims that Musk practically invented the electric car, or for that matter reusable rockets or rockets that land on their tail. He, or for that matter Spacex, invented none of the above.
Musk was the dollars, not the engineering behind these items.

I'm no fan of current electric vehicles, as my posts show, but Musk isn't just the money. None of the business people above me have a degree in physics, can code, or have served as chief engineer.

My friend is taking delivery of his blue colored Rivian on 1/6/23. I will probably meet up within a week to check it out and go for a ride. Any "tests" we can do between the trucks? Was thinking of letting him tow me home for starters :)

I don’t understand how this is even a thread. Might as well be Ford Raptor vs Toyota Tacoma sr5. There’s as much of a price gap.

Some states have banned the sale of small gas engines, and gas cars by 2035. It's the government. If you give them an inch they will take a mile.

I think there are 17 states that have either already put the ban in place or are working on legislation. That’s only 12 years away. I would imagine most manufacturers will have phased out gas vehicles before then. They aren’t going to want to produce products that can’t be sold in half the country. It’s going to get interesting.

CA, NY and MA are the only states that has a ban in place with Washington and Oregon with trigger laws. The others simply align with CARB, that said states have rolled back CARB requirements because they dont work (e.g. New Mexico).

Colorado recently adopted CARB but most of the state doesnt even have emissions testing or requirements so its somewhat moot, eventually the law will be rolled back as well. Considering that half of Oregon wants to cede from itself and join Idaho, I would expect it to roll back as well.

there's not a "ban" per se, but the cali gov'ment sure is making it hard to keep a gas vehicle with the way they tax the shit out of everything revolving around gas engines.

admittedly i haven't looked, but I'm sure there are taxes for charging EVs as well. if there are none then I'd be willing to bet there will be in the near future because gov'ment loves to collect its taxes

Honestly it might be a total non-issue by that point in time if you look at how much electric cars and charging infrastructure have improved in the last 13 years and extrapolate that forward.

Reverse vampire drain last night - the truck charged itself. Parked it at about 2pm after an early work day at 84% and 236 miles and this morning it shows 86% 241 miles.

Charging infrastructure will be fine. The power plants won’t … i Just don’t see how that’s possible especially at night

The power plants have always followed demand. That's just the nature of an open market.

We will see a shift in demand usage. For years there was a push to remove demand during the middle of the day but now that has created a massive peak in demand during the 5pm timeframe. We are also seeing a leveling during the noon timeframe and when you combine this with solar production some areas have actually seen negative pricing during that time (as in you PAY to provide electricity).
That said, we will see a shift soon to daytime charging for battery objects since they can time shift energy. We may even see things like vehicle to grid to move that solar production into the 5pm timeframe. And we are already seeing storage batteries coming online for solar timeshift since it really just needs to move it a few hours (with the negative of needing more batteries)

The simple fact is there is a difference between demand and capacity. The US has the CAPACITY to go 100% EV today, what we don't have is the ability to meet DEMAND. There have been arguments for things like a smart grid for decades now, and what I have seen it's usually shot down by the oil and coal industry, to better balance the difference between capacity and demand

Not everyone will be charging at night at the same time and under full load.

They never said a ban on gas cars. Every response to yours clearly said sale.

Correct. Not NEW sale. Used gas cars are still available to be purchased.
