Would it be better if gets started at 9am? So that the engines sleeping schedule is not disrupted?

Ask yourself this. 2k OCI for a fire truck versus 25k for an 18 wheeler? Now think about why that is.

$3400 to tear down is bullshit op. All they need to do is pull the pan see what in it. If it full of metal, yank a few rod caps and main bearing caps see if they bad. But I stand by my previous statement even if it’s a 15 repair( if the truck is paid for) it’s cheaper than 40k for a new one. At 3400 if they’re labor rate is 150/hr they’re asking for 30hrs to diagnose, that’s tell me they have some pretty shitty techs.

This re time. Working from home I've ended up hitting the 6 months versus 5k miles first which is the first time in my life driving that's happened, but it's cheap insurance.

yes you’re correct. My point is that its “severe” maintenance schedule keeps them running, I’ll do the same for my hard earned money

diesels don’t like to get idled. 18 wheelers are always on the move, fire trucks have a TON of stop and go, and idling (there’s high idle features but we still have quite a lot of older models including pre-DEF). Can’t always rely on shutting the vehicle down either - MVAs require scene lighting for example.

Going to wait to see it Toyota Corp will do anything for me. They said I should hear back from them by Thursday/Friday. The shop I was going to get a quote from and probably have the work done at is closed until Jan 1st.

I will most likely have to get it repaired since new prices are so crazy right now and rates are still pretty high.

So probably no updates for a few days.

IMO it does seem like repair would be the prudent choice.

Yeah wrong word, probably a used motor replacement if that's what the shop ends up saying It needs. But got to see what the options are first and cost etc...

Absolutely agree, first see if Toyota is going to defray some/all of the cost. If not, research other options and make the choice from there.

In general I reckon repairing is the way to go, if on your own I suspect the used engine will be the most balanced but that's perhaps cart before horse right now.

Funny you mention that. My buddy had a gm diesel suburban back in the day, that was left idling for the entire 5 days we went on a bag trip with our snowmobiles cause he was afraid it would never start when we came back due to the sub zero cold. Well, when we came back nearly a week later, there it was still idling just fine.

Nearly every big rig at a truck stop is sitting there idling. If the operator needs a five hour nap it idles. Anyway, happy new year!

Then you know nothing about heavy equipment. There are diesels that idle days, weeks, months and years.

He’s not entirely wrong… we still still have a few e-one’s in the fleet as spares that have well over 200k of hard use on them will idle all day long. The first engines and trucks we got that were DPF equipped (circa 2010) had alot of issues with incomplete regen cycles and subsequent limp modes. The last few apparatus bought all go into high idle automatically when the maxi is applied. The same can be said for a lot of heavy equipment, almost all our new CAT equipment will high idle itself to keep the catalyst warm. I also see a lot of trucks with sleepers on them now run small separate diesel motors when parked.

@hiPSI - you talking machinery/factory run type diesel engines?

    Read what @egb1776 wrote.

Also, I refrained from mentioning earlier - we don’t like to idle our vehicles due to the load on our electrical system with emergency and scene lights.
It’s even written in the manufacturers manual that it’s recommended to refrain from idling at long periods of time.

As @egb1776 mentioned, we had a BUNCH of regen issues with our rigs here as well.
