I'm sure you've already covered this, but what is the purpose of these moats around the floor/foundation?

Any particular reason why or you're just a glutton for punishment? I know I'd be really hesitant to engage in
such shenanigans during ski season. :)

we're doing a full gut renovation on this house , some of the foundations were inadequate for the new seismic requirements of the shearwalls we are adding and some had settled and cracked from being on fill , we have excavated to undisturbed bearing that satisfies the geotechnical and structural engineers

That's awesome; Is seismic a big deal where you live?

The area I live in has the highest seismic potential with respect to lateral restraint in the building code in Canada

yeah Vancouver Island / Gulf Islands and part of the lower mainland has the highest spectral acceleration values in Canada

seismic requirements are part of the BC Building code , there are 2 solutions , either your building complies with provisions in Part 9 of the code (residential) with respect to minimum sizes of brace wall panels within brace wall bands or if not it needs to have a structural engineer design the building for lateral restraint with respect to the spectral acceleration values given for each jurisdiction

Is lateral or transverse acceleration more of a concern at the coast?

No idea , I'm the builder not the engineer

Thank you for all the info. As an engineer I'm just curious.
