Used a rubbing compound with a cutting pad.

I know it's apples and oranges, but...years ago I had a Mazda MX5 with a very similar problem. Almost as if the base did not bond with the primer. Went to wash it one day using a garden hose with a jet spray attachment, and, I swear to Dog, the whole hood paint of the car slid off and on to the driveway. Pieces were anywhere from dinner plate to fine sand in size. Before it was over, paint was releasing from every surface.

Mazda USA knew of the problem and repainted the car at their expense.

Just adding that I have the same paint wear in this area on both step edges on my truck. (passenger side is just a small area) In my case it looks like it was caused by the previous owner stepping there to climb up into the truck. Since it's not rusty and hasn't got worse in the 18 months I have owned it I have left it alone for now. I don't step in this area to get into the truck.

    Nice job on the re-paint!

If it's white it's covered by the ZKG customer service program. Take it in to a dealer and theyll repaint it on toyota dime. Tacomas on the other hand are SOL for the moment and only getting repainted on a case by case basis

Toyota paint is shit. Much like their quality nowadays. My entire roof paint was starting to flake off after 8 years ownership and now that I've had it for 11 years it looks even worse than before up there. I don't even wash the truck now because why bother.

I had this same line on the drivers door sill of my 2014, and a very short section (3-4 inches) on the passenger side as well. In my case, I don't think it's the Super White issues. I blame it on the previous owner using the sill to step up getting into the truck. I tested a small area with a piece of strong white first-aid tape and no paint came off with the tape when I removed it.

I cleaned the area with Prep-Sol and applied a line of white vinyl tape over the length of that edge. I don't use that area to step into the truck and it has held up perfectly. I wish those sill plates they install extended over and down on the edge a little bit.

    Here we go…

    IMG_6813.jpg

I’m seriously debating a full vinyl wrap…at least this way it will give me 5-7 years of not having to worry and I’ll deal with the paint situation then.
