As I said before, I was afraid of central air-conditioners until I almost ten purely because they were noisy. My
aunt and uncle bought the huge 5-bedroom brick colonial in November 1994 and lived there until 2015 or 2016. The house was built in 1981, and it had the original HVAC system when they bought it in 1994. All I remember about the original unit is that it was big, square, and tan in color.

By the summer of 1997, we were living in Northern California, and my mom and I flew to the East Coast where we spent a significant portion of the summer. My cousins had built a ground level fort of sorts in the trees and bushes surrounding the heat pump, which was located on the side of the house (which was normal compared to the Maryland house having it in the backyard). The brick house was located on probably an acre of land at least, backing up to woods. All that space to build a fort, and my cousins had to built in next to the goddamn air-conditioner!

It took a while for my cousins to get me to go all the way inside the trees, because I was afraid the A/C would turn on and I wouldn't have sufficient time to escape. Even though it was Northern Virginia in the summer, and my aunt and uncle undoubtedly had the A/C on, it thankfully never came on while we were playing there. My one cousin and I were both 8 years old at the time, and my older cousin was 11 years old; I initially got quite a bit of shit from them at first for being scared of a noisy air-conditioner. In stark contrast with me, my cousin who is my age would walk up to the York heat pump at the Maryland house and kick it routinely, to "show it who was boss"...

However, I routinely gave my cousin grief in later years because to this day he is still afraid of spiders!

We lived in California from 1996 to 1998 and didn't A/C, but A/C is obligatory in Virginia Beach, and the house my parents bought when we moved there in 1998 did have central air. That house was built in 1996, compared to our place in Pennsylvania that was built in 1990, and my aunt and uncle's respective houses that were both built in the 1980s. HVAC had gotten a lot quieter in the 15 years between my aunt and uncle's house in NoVa being built, and our house in Virginia Beach being built.

Our house in Virginia Beach had a builder grade Carrier straight-cool A/C with a gas furnace located in the attic. The house was two stories, but just under 2,000 square feet wasn't all that big, and the A/C worked great!

The air-conditioner at that house was not as noisy as the last central air-conditioner we had, but it still wasn't all that quiet; I conquered my fear in the summers of 1998 and 1999 by walking right up to the thing while it was running standing over it!

Our house in Virginia Beach was half the size of my aunt and uncle's house in Fairfax County, so it required a much smaller unit. I was 9 when my parents bought that house and 11 when they sold it, and air-conditioner was always roughly half my height. I'd guess, based on the size and location of the house, that it was a 3-ton.

Even though I was never afraid of air-conditioners noise-wise after that, I was afraid of touching the condenser fins out of fear that they might hot, kind of like an old electric stove with coil elements.

Our house in Whidbey Island did not have central A/C, and our house in Northern Virginia had a Trane XE900 on which the coils were behind a louvered metal guard, so I couldn't touch those. It was not until my parents rented the house in Doylestown, when we moved back to Pennsylvania in 2005, that I was able to touch test the condenser of our central A/C and confirm that they would not burn me.

For the record, the condenser may get a little warm due to the normal process of conditioning air on a hot day, but I've never known them to get hot. When the A/C is running, the low pressure line (fat copper tube) will get cold, and on really hot days it will get wet and sweaty. The high-pressure side (thin copper tube) will get hot, but not scalding hot.

In a heat pump, which looks identical to an air-conditioner from the outside but has a reversing valve to switch the flow of refrigerant, the low side will get incredibly hot when the unit is running in heat mode. This is because the refrigerant gets hot when the unit is heat mode as it is literally A/C in reverse. A heat pump performs identically to a straight-cool A/C when in cool mode.

Both of the Destroy All Humans! games were originally made for the PS2, and I thought that the PS4 remaster of the original game was pretty damn good; I have been playing the totally redone PS5 version of the second game for over five hours, and I have to say that I don't think I've had this much fun playing a video game since GTA 5 came out in 2013! I stayed up until 4am playing GTA back in 2013...

    :anonymous:

Anyway, the graphics on the PS5 are incredible! The game take place in 1969, with a decent part taking place in a fictionalized version of San Francisco. As such, both hippies and Volkswagens are well-represented...
