Yeah that's what @tonered said. I'll probably just have to get used to the hill assist. But I've had the Tacoma 4 months and haven't yet.

It’s not the worst all the time. Think back to when we had to play the full body game of clutch, gas, parking brake, steering wheel on steep hills.

Just remember that no matter what you get, you will always find something to nitpick.

If you are truly convinced lack of hill start assist will make you happy, and have the money to trade up, go for it.

But I’d be willing to bet the issue here is more that you miss your old truck, and fear that you made the wrong decision with your “last chance.”

Maybe consider a MT sports car as a fun vehicle. A Tacoma with a MT is far from a rally car, so maybe you just don’t love driving stick in a truck at this point in your life.

Good times. Sad that the younger generations won’t experience the stress of a hill start with no assist, inciting fear of rolling into the car behind.

Ehh, after second thought, I think they’ll make do.

Sorry. Should've bought a trd offroad or pro instead of the sport. The sport is a rip-off imho. See if you can trade it with someone, although I doubt they will. The trd pro and offroad definitely have better features than the sport. The dealer should give you all your asking for, especially since they just discontinued the manual transmission from ALL Tacoma models. Hope you can find a trd pro or offroad in manual transmission now.

The sport is the only way to get an access cab and a manual. Toyota still makes manual transmission Tacomas, don’t spread false information.

The first time my sport did the hill assist thing I wasn't expecting it, and I thought it was cool as hell!

Toyota has canceled the manual transmission on existing orders moving forward. Its over for the manual transmission from Toyota. They will still let you spec it in your build, but they will not build it for you. They will contact you and tell you that it's no longer available. Also someone else on Tacoma world posted about it, but there isn't much info floating around. I would definitely talk with someone from Toyota to try and get a full understanding. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/no-more-trd-pro-mt.786890/

I'm not saying this for no reason. It's a very real possibility, especially with all the supply shortages of everything.

    “Stands to reason.”

Is there any actual proof that Toyota canceled the MT? Proof beyond a few people stating “Toyota canceled my order”

I’m not saying they still make the manual in the Tacoma, but all we have here is some anecdotal hearsay from a YouTuber who wants clicks.

I think one guy had a Pro cancelled, but my speculation is the Dealership went through its allotment of Pro's.

I’m not saying Autotrader is the perfect sample representation but 12% of the 2023 Tacomas listed are manuals. They are still being built.

There are always things I like and dislike when we get a new vehicle. But the hill start assist is just really annoying - it rears it's ugly head when you aren't expecting and it conflicts with the way I've driven MT's for the last 45 years. I learned to drive MT on the hills of Pittsburgh - in a '75 Chevy Vega.

I had an '07 Pontiac Solstice with MT with less than 10k miles I traded for the Ranger (which I then traded for the Tacoma). I half regret it but obviously with only 10k miles I didn't drive it much and with the used car market the way it is and otherwise not having a trade because the Frontier was totaled I figured it was a good time.

I still have an '88 Fiero Formula with MT with 2600 miles but it's fallen into a state of disrepair from sitting. It looks like brand new though. Biggest issue is it needs head gaskets which is on my todo list.

Just don't use your brake to hold you in place on an incline and it won't kick in.
Might be replacing your clutch a bit sooner though!:hattip::crapstorm::burnrubber:

    : )B

P.s. I've grown to like the feature.

P.s.s. You might try using just enough brake to hold the truck. I have found it NOT kick in at times when I am barely touching the brake. VMMV

The hand brake is designed purposefully for hill starts with a manual tranny.

Hill starts have never been a problem, people want a manual just because they don't want automatic features. Then Toyota adds an automatic feature to the manual truck??? WTF?

So what’s the reason for not liking that? I’ve driven manuals my whole life (until the Tacoma) and starting on a hill has always been a little bit of a pain. Hill assist is a nice feature. I don’t know why someone would want to disable it.

If it forces me to change the way I drive that's probably not the change I will make. One thing I like about MT's is if you're kind to them they will last forever. I'm kind to the tranny and I'm kind to the clutch. I've never had to replace a clutch.

I have tried the light brake but that concerns me because it's easy to start drifting backwards without realizing it and if I drift into a car behind me trying to circumvent the annoyance I will become more than just annoyed. Currently I just wait for it to disengage and then start out like normal. The guy behind probably doesn't like it though.

I was just hoping there was some secret decoder ring way to turn it off.

The way I start out on a hill is to release the clutch gradually and when it starts to engage move my foot from the brake to the gas and apply the gas lightly so that the engine doesn't lug or stall but doesn't really rev either as I continue to release the clutch. This may seem difficult or clumsy but for my vehicles that I drive daily or frequently it's just one fluid motion that becomes second nature I don't even think about it. The light turns green and I just go simple as that. Steep hills can be a little nerve racking especially nowadays because the person behind you isn't aware that the person in front of them might have a MT. But hill assist doesn't increase my confidence in that situation.

Years ago on Car Talk one of the brothers loaned their MT car to a friend who when they returned it said "You'll be pleased to know that I didn't stall it once" - which he wasn't because a week later he had to replace the clutch. They said you should lug the engine and even occasionally stall it and that's how I drive. But I find myself in situations where the truck won't move - because the brakes are still on. Several times I went to start out and it wouldn't move and I thought argh I'm in 3rd so I put in 1st but same thing - I thought argh why can't I hit 1st so I really put it in 1st and the backup camera came on - and then I realized argh I *was* in 1st but the brakes were still on.

With hill assist I have to think about it. If I can get to the point where I don't think about it I'll be okay with it but so far in 4 months of driving that hasn't happened. I suppose though that over enough time that it probably will.

I find your post curious. Why? For those of who will be offroading our trucks across the lawn with a load of mulch, and nothing beyond, the TRD Sport is a far better vehicle than the TRD Off Road (or Pro).
