I thought about starting a thread in the 3rd gen section about this but I’m not, lol.

I drove my truck home from hunting the other day in 4wd going 60ish at times. Nothing happened. I am getting better mileage though o_O

I've had hydronic heating in 2 previous houses and presently have it in my shop. It's simply amazing.

I would have a hard time going back to a conventional heating type again.

Here's a couple of pictures of a guy's truck that I hunt with. He lives in a retirement subdivision on the edge of a small town and thinks it happened in his driveway. Bullet entered the roof, followed the structure and came out just above the windshield. Watch where you're shootin' kids! 20200208_085850.jpg 20200208_085903.jpg

Not to be a party pooper but… For the backstop you will want ballistic steel, same stuff metal targets are made of. It’s not cheap but you don’t want to go cheap here. In the video they used mild steel and made the comment about .223/5.56 dimpling what they used, that’s why you want ballistic steel. (I know you said handguns in your post but we all know AR's are fun too.) Even handguns, especially.357 and up are going to punch through after it fatigues the metal enough and the divots cause the deflected bullets to do strange stuff. I like that overall plan for an outside range with a secondary berm behind but I would strongly recommend going with a commercial made bullet trap for your plans. Reason being, you are going to have a lot of downrange liability so you want to show you have taken as much precaution as possible. Also consider, your homeowners will probably drop you like a hot potato if they find out.

Second big consideration inside a building is ventilation. There are lots of nasty, not good for your lungs problems with indoor ranges. The biggest being airborne lead from the bullet impacting the backstop. You will want positive ventilation, blowing from behind your firing point toward the target. Additional suction above the backstop and a water wash on the backstop itself to keep the led dust down.

Sorry to be a downer but I’ve spent a long time on outdoor and indoor ranges, from a safety standpoint, there is more to the project than you think.

Good morning Shane and crew. A very humid and warm last day of 2022 here, we had some serious rain push through late yesterday afternoon and into the night.

The correct name of ballistic steel is called Abrasion Resistant steel.

Yes, I know, nit picking, but being a fabricator, these things bug me.

In the shooting world, it actually makes sense to call it ballistic. Most metal shops call it AR steel. The shooting peeps already use those initials pretty often.

I have a couple of "allegedly" AR500 gongs, but never knew what the "AR" stood for.

I say allegedly because I have mine hanging from chains and angled slightly forward to deflect rounds into the ground, but fast rifle rounds like .223 .243 and 25/06 will still crater them to varying degrees.

You make several excellent points; I was hoping there might be some cheap redneck way to accomplish this but I'm not looking to kill anyone (or myself)...I may just get a shooting range membership. Thank you for the great info.:fistbump:

Yes us gun nuts call it AR steel too, I know the actually name is AR steel but I wanted to clarify I wasn’t talking about the target company called AR targets.

Any rifle round above 3000 fps is hard on the steel. Steel target manufacturers usually have a .223/5.56 warning to not shoot it closer than 50 yards and not to use any steel core ammo. I can tell you that distance still leaves shallow impressions in 3/8” AR 500 targets
