The CA spec cats are more expensive because they filter better, but all Tacomas after 2000(?) came with OEM/50 state legal cats from factory which is what the rear O2 sensor is programmed to read. Which is why I think a lot of folks in other states that get cheaper cats still end up with a P0420 that won't go away, or it goes away for a bit but comes back a year or so later.

I think it's a good idea to get 50 state cats if you want to ensure that the cat inefficiency code won't pop up, the Magnaflow ones are good...I've had them for about 6 years and they are just now starting to go bad. They aren't as good as OEM ones but probably the best aftermarket option to avoid spending $3k+ on OEM ones.

In CA you only have to get the "sniffer test" done to your vehicle if it's a 1999 or older model, which is where the weaker cats will result in an emissions reading that won't pass. For 2000 and up, they only do visual inspection and visually the cats all look the same as far as I can tell.

These are under the "federal" catagory....the OEM grade are supposed to be good for keeping the 0420 code from popping up again.

These are listed under the California registered vehicle for CARB compliance. Thinking I can get away with the OEM version instead of the California version. I emailed Magnaflow to see what they recommend, I don't want any codes a few months from now.

You can get a full on exhuast system with no cats (sell ur oem ones for some serious cash).

also get an air intake that doesn’t have a carb sticker?

not really anything crazy that they came with besides more stuff inside the cat I think to pass the stricter emission requirements

Can you still pass TX inspection with a CEL?

Not sure about Texas emissions (or if they even exist )

But you’re right the CA cats are always more expensive since they have more material inside to meet the EPA/SMOG requirements.

I know when I use to mod cars we would put in high flow cats to avoid the CEL light. Some guys would get away with CA smog with them on since the shop didn’t fail the visual inspection.

That could be an option or if Texas SMOG isn’t as strict you can get test pipes/ a straight pipe (if you don’t mind the noise) with a O2 spaced to avoid the CEL.

Nope, maybe in the rural counties but not in a metroplex area!

Thinking about replacing the front cat then going with an exhaust replacement from there on back....Magnaflow has a stock version that isn't terribly expensive. The wife's 06 Honda Pilot needs a new cat too so getting my 01 fixed is going to take a back seat to hers since it's not a daily driver. Or we may just replace her car with a new one!
